Having spent most of my night playing COD with a bunch of them I have to say that they are a most interesting lot. Very rude. Very aggro. Very boastful. Very American.

I have a question when Codename Section comes back on. What's all this "devilry"? All last night and morning, it's "devil this" devil that". What does this mean and how can everyone be "devil"? I should think that would be confusing. I know about the Teufel Hund. It's just that it is so confusing that everyone's just "devil". Not everyone can be "devil" else you'll get confused. I know I was.

Can someone explain?

Yes. "Devil" is a pet name more or less. It's meaning is entirely a linguistic nightmare though. It is entirely dependent on the body language, eye contact - or lack thereof, tone etc...

Devil could easily translate into -

"I will kick your ass and then eat your heart."

Or just as easily to-

"Shit man, rough day? Bring your head to my bosom..."

It's flexibility is also a linguistic nightmare. It can be used to address individuals, or entire groups. Basically, the adjective used helps alot, however the sarcasm heavily infused in the USMC language makes this very difficult to discern by outsiders.

Example : "Outstanding devil dog!" said with a smile means you shit the bed somehow. And the world will know about it, and beat your ass for it later.

What can I say, it is a morbid, yet effective cryptography for marines. And they wonder why they have a hard time with civilians.

Another connotation that is likely to be heard among marines is "kill" and "er". "Kill" meaning both approval and acknowledgement. "Er", often simply grunted or inflected in infinite ways, can mean anything from "WTF?!" to "Say again?" to "Got it".

Black people got ebonics, red necks got the "Boomhower", the Scottish have Scottish Gaelic, and the Marines have a series of half grunted words and utter linguistic butchery.

One last comment on marines. It is as if you have blended the Irish with the cockneys and come up with a special breed. My head is still pounding.
