View Full Version : Should graphs be sourced?

I have noticed this for awhile now, and not to target the poster in specific:

http://thepoliticalforums.com/threads/19438-The-reason-we-have-the-knockout-game-is-because-we-ve-taken-God-out-of-our-schools?p=440019#post440019

It seems that people don't source their graphs fairly often, I've noticed AmazonTania almost always sources her graphs, and I think the rest of us should take care to do the same.

I hardly ever post graphs, because I think they're silly and linking a whole article which contains graphs is always better both for informational purposes and it makes the poster look that much more reputable.

I could go into paint right now and make a graph saying whatever I want it to. Without a source for other graphs anyone else could do the same.

Discuss (And please don't just tell me you think graphs/statistics are skewed and dishonest, we've all heard that spiel before).

I think you linked to the wrong post. Adelaide didn't post a graph.

But yes, I think every claim should be sourced.

I think in the interests of honesty and transparency you should provide some sort of credit to the source of the information. If you got your graph from a website, provide a link to the site. If you generated it using statistics from data files, simply give credit to the organization that gathered the data (Pew, Gallup, The World Bank, etc.). The only time one shouldn't have to cite a graph is when he or she collected the data, which I don't think happens very often around here.

Correct post. Sorry Adelaide.

Graphs are images, and as such, appeal to me on the exact same EMOTIONAL level that pix do.

Citing stats is only as good as your sources,

and there is so much DISinformation out there ~
even when YOU know exactly what you're searching for?
The massive amount of crap that you have to wade through,
and many times?
If it's considered unPC?
You're going to spin your wheels in freakin' quicksand,
trying to get THERE from HERE.

Right now, Amazon Tania (whom I think of as AMAZING Tania), could post anything,
and because of her credibility,
I would trust it, even without any citations.

Other members could also post anything,
and because of their credibility,
I would NOT trust it, even with massive amounts of citations.

actually, AT CLAIMS to source the graphs she CREATES. her graphs, themselves, are unsourced

and the person to whom you linked sources her work. (there was also no graph in the post in question).

but whatever.

Amazon sources her graphs. Other than she's shown you wrong many times and you hate that, what exactly do you have against her?

Yes, I probably should have sourced it. Usually charts and such are sourced in the image, I was careless. I've corrected: http://thepoliticalforums.com/threads/19438-The-reason-we-have-the-knockout-game-is-because-we-ve-taken-God-out-of-our-schools?p=440113&viewfull=1#post440113.

Expertly sourced. Meticulously researched.

Good advice, capitalize the first word in a sentence, capitalize proper names. :cuckoo:

I bet she makes a lot of the graphs from existing data. Many of them say where the info comes from. And some have her name on them.

I suspect for most people here, the graphs are indecipherable.

Jigglin' jumped AmazingTania the FIRST THANG about how AT was plagiarising graphs.

Without actually clicking on any of the graphs,
nor acknowledging their validity,
nor ANY of their citations.

I don't think s/he can actually READ, tbh ...

Interesting, in a topic asking if graphs should be source, you and jillian stand out going off topic to attack others personally. Why be so ugly in most every post?

Of course they should be. Many of them have the source embedded. Otherwise, the source should be stated.

Doesn't matter, the nasty sisters can't read them anyway.

This thread is representative of how off the track this forum is getting when you can even insult each other over sourcing or not sourcing graphs.

Frankly, junie, you're not sourcing the graphs. You're just giving the url to the image. And in at least the last two cases your link goes to a different graph.

Proper sourcing would be to provide a link to the article or paper or book or whatever where you go it.

http://i.snag.gy/fZ4Pj.jpg

http://i.snag.gy/fZ4Pj.jpg is the link to the graph as image, but not to the source. The source is http://bayesianheresy.blogspot.com/2007/11/solow-reviews-farewell-to-alms.html
