China icebreaker heads to trapped Antarctic shiphttp://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71955000/jpg/_71955808_8co-leaderchrisfogwilltakingabreak-creditandrewpeacock.jpgChris Fogwill and the team are retracing the steps of Douglas Mawson a century ago

A Chinese icebreaker is expected to reach a scientific mission ship trapped in dense pack ice off East Antarctica since Christmas Day.

The Snow Dragon icebreaker will try to cut a path through the ice so the research vessel Academic Shokalskiy can reach open waters. The Russian vessel is being used by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. There are 74 people on board. They are following the route explorer Douglas Mawson travelled a century ago.The Chinese icebreaker may ask for assistance from two other boats - French vessel L'Astrolabe and Australia's Aurora Australis - which are also heading into the icy waters of the Southern Ocean. The research ship is trapped by thick sheets of ice that were driven by strong winds about 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart - the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania. However, there are fears that blizzards could hamper the rescue effort. The Shokalskiy is well stocked with food and is in no danger, according to the the science team led by Chris Turney and Chris Fogwill.Although trapped for the moment, the scientists are continuing their experiments. They have been measuring temperature and salinity through cracks in the surrounding ice.Science volunteer Sean Borkovic told the BBC: "I'll always remember this, that's for sure. It's brilliant. We've got some lovely light and the weather's pretty mild considering. The ship looks solid. I think we'll be good."A visit from Secret Santa and a suptuous Christmas dinner cranked up the celebratory mood. The goal of the modern day Australasian Antarctic Expedition is to repeat many of the original measurements and studies of the Mawson expedition to see how facets of the environment have changed over the past century.

Go China right?

edit- The Snow Dragon. Thats awesome.

They also have The Peace Ark that helped the people of the Phillipines.

China is awsome.

China to the rescue!

edit- and how about those cheap cheap Chinese solar panels? I wish they would dump some in Australia. Anti-dumping laws on solar panels? What is wrong with the west? Ha ha Solyndra. you cant compete with China!

Go China!

The ice breaker sent out to rescue a tourist ship submerged in Antarctic ice since Christmas Day is stuck en-route to the vessel.

The Chinese icebreaker Xue Long, or Snow Dragon, is six nautical miles away from the stranded Russian ship and may take another two days to reach it, its captain has said.

That is really pathetic Peter. Also a lie.

The Chinese Snow Dragon went to help but the ice was too thick. So they sent their helicopter to take a look. They decided to wait. the Australian ice breaker sent was not going to be able to get through either.

The Snow Dragon is still there and will helicopter the crew off the ship if they have to..

But why be a retard about something nice that they are doing? Americans are losers. Gotta attack nations for no good reason.

Where was USA for help?

Go China!

CNN) -- A Chinese ship trying to reach a trapped expedition vessel in Antarctica has turned back.
The icebreaker Xue Long, or Snow Dragon, was just six nautical miles away from the Russian-flagged vessel when the captain decided the ship could not get any closer, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said Saturday.
The Snow Dragon went back to open water and remains in the vicinity of the stuck ship, the Akademik Shokalskiy, to provide support, said Andrea Hayward-Maher, spokeswoman for the AMSA. The Chinese vessel has a helicopter on board that could assist in evacuation.

It appears that the Americans might have to get involved as the Chinese don't appear to be able to get the job done!

"A Lie " I mean.

And what does this mean?

Peter either is a liar or cant read.

This is what is wrong with USA. Weak coward slave morality. You feel threatened by China so you cheer against them. Its weak.

Snow Dragon was not stuck in an ice.

Western media is so pathetic. And many westerners.

Boooooo! Losers.

Australia's ice breaker is about 10 nautical miles away right now. they don't think they're going to be able to get through either and there are reports of a rescue by air lift. i'm not sure if that would be an australian effort or other country or some type of joint effort.

Oh my god you people are pathetic.

The ice is too thick. Snow Dragon is still there. Will use helicopter if have to. Did not "fail" like weak western media reported.

You all suck.

So china has already failed and turned the rescue over to a westernized nation, not surprising when the going gets tuff the Chinese get going!

Yes why don't Americans like myself just continue to spend our hard-earned money rescuing and supporting the people of progressive cesspool nations that hate us, call us "losers" and "retard" and still expect something in return for nothing?

I thought Russians were supposed to have some hair on their chests? And I'm sure this whole forum is aware of your support for China. Aren't you from Australia?

Looks to me like you are all the losers. :biglaugh: Maybe we ought to send Anderson Cooper down there to teach you all how to walk six miles in cold weather. Even he could do that, I'm sure.

I would say send Obama there, but we just can't afford to fly him, his wife, his posse, and decoy planes to the antarctic to watch another dismal government failure. Then America would join the list of morons stuck in the ice.

Im pretty sure the Chinese Snow Dragon helicopter is going to pick them up. God, its like when China gave aid and sent the Peace ark to help the Phillipinos and everyone attacked them for it even though they actually hate the Phillipinos and what they did was really nice.

It makes no sense to attack them for doing nice things. And the rescue is not complete. So there is no fail. There is no urgency or rush. The Australian ice breaker that went wasnt goinf to be able to break through either but I guess they thought maybe they could help. Anyway, China is trying to help and you would imagine this is good and not bad right?

Shadow Dragon may be stuck in ice after all. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-25585006?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_term=%2AMorning%20Brief&utm_campaign=MB%201.3.14)

"Xue Long notified Amsa [the Australian Maritime Safety Authority]... this afternoon [that] it has concerns about their ability to move through heavy ice in the area," Amsa said in a statement (http://www.amsa.gov.au/media/documents/030114UpdateAntartica.pdf).

You guys know what I just thought about? This ship is in the antarctic, which means that unlike here where it makes sense that it's cold right now, it's summer in that part of the world (the southern hemisphere) and they are stuck in the ice that they didn't expect to be there because of "global warming."

Think about it again. If they didn't expect ice, why did they take a ship strengthened to withstand ice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akademik_Shokalskiy)? What they didn't count on were winds pushing the ice loosened by warming temperatures back against the continent. That's the same reason the Ice Breakers got stuck.
