Dressed in a uniform with an FDNY patch, Lifander spoke at a 9/11 memorial service in Spartanburg, S.C., last year (http://www.blueridgenow.com/article/20120222/ARTICLES/120229908), telling the crowd he attended "47 funerals in three weeks for brothers who died that day." He received a standing ovation.
According to the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, current and former New York City firefighters contacted the paper on Monday saying Liflander's story was a "sham."
When contacted by the paper, he said he had been "trying to get out of the situation" and "got caught up in the moment."

Another wannabe. Remember we had some guy all dressed up in Marine Uniform and he had all kinds of ribbions and medals. Then they discovered the guy never served a day in his life.

We just had some guys driving down I-80 in an unmarked black Crown Vic. Pulling women over and as if they were cops. Black guy and white guy dre4ssed in Suits. Showing fake badges and then Taking all the victims valuables. Thing was I was on my way home Sunday Morning day. I was doing like 75-80 and I came up on this car. So I had to slow down, thinking it was a cop. So they were driving right next to me on the passenger side. Monday they released radio alerts telling people what do if an Unmarked Real Cop car puts it's light on and attempts to pull one over.

These guys had tinted windows all they way round except the front of the windshield. Although they never attempted to pull over males that were driving. Monday Indiana and Illinois, plus Chicago Cops were out looking for these guys.

I don't know what makes people do it for no reason at all. One thing is for sure.....they usually end up getting the attention they want. Just not in the way they thought about it!

We had a guy pulling that crap out here, on back country roads. They caught him though...you can get pretty good deals on those Crown Vics through auctions. Read about one guy who bought one and souped it up for a cross country race.

In that regard, Rodriguez differs from run-of-the-mill military impersonators who stop at dressing up like soldiers and wearing medals they didn't earn. Simply putting up that facade could violate the Stolen Valor Act, a 2005 federal law that targets fake military heroes. But that law is in dispute after a federal judge in Denver ruled last month that it is an unconstitutional infringement on free-speech rights.
Attorney Chris Beall said he wrote a brief in support of the defendant in that case, Rick Strandlof, to protect some of the rights his father and grandfather went into the military to preserve.
"The trouble with that (law) is that it puts the government in the position of deciding what lies are prosecutable and what lies are protected by the First Amendment," Beall said. "I, on behalf of the (American Civil Liberties Union), take the view that we are better off allowing some people to lie than allowing the government to decide what the truth is."
