Giordano Bruno (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giordano_Bruno)was burned at the stake on this day in 1600 in Rome at the Campo de Fiori. His sentence resulted more from his Hermetic beliefs than his scientific views.

The last time I was in Rome I stayed at apartments very close to the Campo de Fiori. Oddly, I didn't take pictures there....

I've always been a fan of Giordano Bruno. About two years ago, I got acquainted with the historical fiction books of British journalist S.J. Parris, 1500s mysteries featuring Giordano Bruno as the main character and investigator of mysteries. They are quite interesting.

They are fantastic. So far, she's got three out, with a fourth due this year.

Heresy (2010)
Prophecy (2011)
Sacrilege (2012)
Treachery (2014)

I've read Prophecy and I own Sacrilege.

Exactly but the story is told quite differently in popular literature and TV.

If they were tried by the Church we would know about it. They kept records.

Except there's no reason not to trust them on this. They were very open about what they did because they believed they were in the right. They also kept some of the most extensive records in known history.
