The firearm's history may be correct, but the presenter's contention that Lewis and Clark survived their journey to the Pacific Ocean unharmed because the "air-rifle's" effectiveness was demonstrated to the native peoples is asinine.
The expedition had to be welcomed into the tribe to demostrate the weapon, this would not have happened if the natives were a treat. No one, in their right mind, would contend that the Comanche or Apache of the southwest US were intimidated by far more advanced weaponry; or would have let an expedition in the southwest to enter a tribe and demonstrate a repeating rifle.
The native peoples along the L&W route were non hostile to the expidition or they would have attacked the expidition without having any prior knowledge of the weapon or its capabilities.
History and lore should not be mixed.

In the "race" forum where these discussions belong?
You could take a fucking recipe thread and turn it into a racially charged discussion. Because it's who you are.

I have seen the story told (sans air rifle) on PBS, I believe.
As near as memory serves me, one tribe was hostile. And the woman indian calmed that down.
At least, near as I recall.
