ahh...he musta been a good puppy because he didn't get a lump of coal!

I had a Quaker parrot that would whistle for the dog and then toss bird seed out of the cage for the dog to eat. The dog was a dobe (and a very dumb one). The dog would stick her nose up to the cage looking for more seeds and the parrot would nip her on the nose. The dog would run away. Every time that bird whistled, the dog would show up and go through the whole thing again! That's why I said the dobe was so dumb!

I love smart little animals. They have an endless capacity for love and loyalty. To us and to each other! Merry Christmas PolWatch.

Thinking about the bird (Hagar the Horrible) made me remember another of his tricks. He would sit in the cage and call 'here kitty, kitty'. One of the cats would always respond and sit on the floor, staring at the bird (I'm sure he was just admiring the feathers). The bird would jump to his highest perch and start screaming "get the cat! get the cat!"

He woke us every morning about 5 am by yelling "Good Mooorrrrnnnniiiiggg". He could really stretch the word morning out...he was the only bird I have ever seen that had a southern accent! I really miss that bird...he was real hoot!

African greys are very intelligent...some of them know hundreds of words and can actually do basic addition & subtraction! I always wanted one but they are very $$$...like macaws...several thousand $$$. I raised parakeets & cockatiels to sell and had a Quaker parrot as a pet. Husband had a pair of button quail just because they are so cute. My house sounded like the soundtrack of a Tarzan movie when they all started yelling.
