I make italian style artichokes, I cut the tips with a scissor till they are all strait. I cut the bottom off till its level. I open all the leaves and I pour italian bread crumbs with garlic paresan or romano cheese and some parsley into all the leaf pockets till their full. Then I drizzle olive oil over the top to hold it.
Then I put 2inchs of water into a pot and stand the artichokes up and put a lid and let them go until they are tender.

The way I do it adds alot of flavor. When their done the bread crumbs stick to the leafe you take the leaf off and scrape it with your teeth. Then when you get to hair scrape it off and eat the heart. I LOVE THEM damn things.

I trim them like Common does, and then just boil them with oil and garlic. My husband looks at me eating them as if I was from another planet. He says too much work for so little reward.
I save the heart for last.
I love 'em.

A vegetable with hair? I think I'll pass on that one. That will leave more of 'em for you & Redrose

It's not really hair, it's weird, fibers. like a closed flower. You just pinch them and pull them out, they pull out easily and the smooth meaty heart is there. I think it's natures way of protecting the heart, you can't eat them, they are extremely bitter and prickly.
Do you eat anchovies? They are hairy fish.

Try the breadcrumbs Rose drizzle with olive oil, it will become your favorite part.
My wife loves them too, my father used to say they were a waste of time like your husband.

Here is a picture of the "hairy" part of the artichoke. It's called the choke.
