If you follow that link it will take you to the 12z run of the ECMWF or European model. Scroll over the numbers at the top, to follow the storm per this run of the model. Between hours 120 and 144 Irene makes landfall at a strong Category 3 storm. By Hour 144, most of North Carolina is feeling the forces of a tropical storm and/or a hurricane.

What you think D.....

You think it's really going to be as big as they say?

Seems a lot of times they blow these things out of proportion. Their models aren't always good predictors with something this far out. I guess it is best to take precautions anyway.

It's looking that way.....and when it concerns the ocean rising up. I wouldn't give a shit what they say. I have flown over that blue shit and if it wants to rise up with 100 and 200 ft waves. I have no doubt in my mind it can do it. I am glad I dont live by the ocean.

Yeah don't mess with the ocean. When there was the earthquake in Japan they said we'd get a tsunami here but it never did amount to much. They also said those reactors were gonna blow but it seems it all worked out ok.

Well truthfully they did show the Tsunami and where it hit.....but all was more focused on the the Japanese lies concerning the nuclear reactors. Still that water pushed in land and had those Japanese people running like a bat out of hell. They showed a group that manage to make it to at least a 5th Story building. I saw another where a guy was drving a cab. He managed to get out of the way even tho the water was surrounding him and some other cars.

No way I would want to live by the ocean. Even staying there I was always watching weather reports. Been to both oceans. Looks great until those Never seen before type storms rise up. I dont even like swimming in the ocean. I prefers to see whats around me.

Plus like with Florida I hate those jellyfish.....those things can mess you up. You can count on one thing if I was staying around the ocean and some shit was up I would be one of those that was with the heads up. Plus a way out.

Make sure you get some candles too.

Out here they have these funky religious candles that are huge and burn for a long time in glass jars. The seem really popular with the Mexicans. Like this:

I see those in the Spanish section of the grocery store. Good idea, actually. I should get a few candles. I have a flashlight but that's about it. They are super tacky. lol I was listening to one guy and he said.....He fears for New Yorkers. Gave some long spiel about them and their History.

Basically it gives out like.....New Yorkers are so ignorant and stubborn, that they would be bitchin how the weather people got it so wrong. While they are up to their waist in standing water. Yelling something out like......"What," you call this a flood? :D :D

Aaaaaah what the hell.....Did all the news stop in the World and all there is Irene and Qadhafi. Sheeesh.....I am sitting here listening to CNN and some broad in NY is talking about flooding in NY. What to do if you are stuck in a car and the car goes under water. Don't kick out the windshield because it is harder to kick out. Kick out the side window. It is tempered glass and will shatter. Daaaaaang this broad has batteries, Jumper cables, her own little battery operated air compressor to fill up a tire.

On the a more interesting note. The President will leave Marthas later tonight one day earlier from his vacation and according to Suzann he will hunker-down In Washington at the White House. Where the storm is expected to hit too. ::)

Conley
08-26-2011, 12:12 PM
Actually if you are in a car that goes underwater your best best is to roll down a side window.

If you have one of those fancy new cars that only has power windows ;) and no crank you could be in trouble. Kickin out the windows is darn near impossible and you will use up oxygen and strength.

Get one of these and keep it in your glove compartment.

I'm sure there are others, this was just the first result that came up when I googled. Not sure which brand I have.

Not kidding, I saw a show about this stuff (Mythbusters) and it was scary. Especially out in the country on the rural roads, sometimes people drive off the road and into a body of water by accident and that's all she wrote. :(

Keep in mind that movie will likely be reality if we keep up our dependence on foreign oil.

We get out early on Fridays in the summer. I was at happy hour and this was mentioned. Where was this week's Monday night game? They probably should postpone the east coast games. I mean forget about traveling. If there are serious outages we can't even watch the games on TV. Of course Mister D is absorbed in a book at the moment. ;)

Where did you mention Happy Hour? Why wasn't I invited? ;D

The game is at the Meadowlands...NY Giants

Yep, I gotcha.

If it were further south I would be worried but these things seem to lose strength quickly once they actually make landfall and if it's already down to Cat 1 I don't think it can regain strength unless it heads back out to sea which I don't think happens. Thing is that it seems to me every time they make it out to be a big disaster and it isn't one, that makes people less likely to take the real threats seriously, you know? But they are doing it for ratings, not as a public service, so I guess they have to make it seem like the End of Days.

Here's how the Weather Channel reports:

"NAGS HEAD, N.C. — Standing where he warned others not to tread, the beach on the Outer Banks during Hurricane Irene’s landfall, Mike Seidel had sand in his teeth, his pockets and his ears. He was soaking wet, barely able to hear — and he was beaming.

“We haven’t missed a live shot in three hours!” he exclaimed while trying to stand up on the battered beach here in his seventh hour of live television reporting. A minute later, he was back on the Weather Channel, where he would stay for a total of 15 hours on Saturday, seeing, feeling and tasting the storm several times each hour as a surrogate for viewers and a guide for evacuees.

Yes, what Mr. Seidel does may seem crazy at times, but most important for him and for his bosses, it is compelling TV — the Weather Channel’s ratings are never higher than when a hurricane is making landfall. Like Home Depot selling plywood for windows or Wal-Mart selling jugs of water, the Weather Channel sells coverage of weather-related disasters. Delivering on its promise to take people into the path of Mother Nature is what makes the channel a must-carry for cable systems across the United States, and what allows it to sell so many storm-related ads to insurance companies and home improvement stores before, during and after storms. "

As you might suspect it's all about the $$$

It began as something far off and dangerous — a monster storm, a Category 3 hurricane that packed winds of 115 miles an hour as it buzz-sawed through the Caribbean last week, causing more than a billion dollars of destruction in the Bahamas alone.

But when Hurricane Irene finally chugged into the New York area on Sunday, it was like an overweight jogger just holding on at the end of a run. Its winds had diminished to barely hurricane strength, and the threat from its storm surge, which officials had once worried might turn Manhattan into Atlantis, was epitomized by television news reports showing small waves lapping over reporters’ feet.

My boss just sent me a text. He says he'll call me later to discuss the plan for tomorrow. I guess parts of the state got hit pretty hard but thank God I'm fine here. I slept through most of it and just got up to mop parts of the basement a couple times. The Garden State Parkway is flooded, apparently. I've never seen that happen before. Weird...we had a earthquake and a hurricane in the same week.

It certainly didn;t likve up to the hype but I guess being over prepared is better than not being prepared at all. I also have some NYC clients who were not able to enter their offices today. Some areas of Manhattan were evacuated and you couldn't get in them today.

Being overprepared is good I suppose, as long as the next time there is a real threat people don't blow it off. Still I expect it will be a while before NYC faces a hurricane. I think that's a big reason for the coverage -- NYC. There have been other hurricanes that have killed hundreds in the south (not talking about Katrina) and it didn't seem to get as much play. Of course that was years ago and the 24/7 news cycle has just gotten more intense.

No doubt the current cable news format plays a role.

Hurricane Ike was three years ago and I barely remember it. I'm sure people in TX and FL do...it killed about 120 it seems. I just think in hindsight Irene wasn't much.

And NYC...there's nothing the media likes better than reporting on themselves and fluffing up their own importance ;)

Yeah, NYC adds some appeal to the story I'm sad to say.

A lot of people think subliminally or otherwise that New Yorkers are more important than those out in the sticks...

A hurricane in the big city! :o Geepers! :D

I guess it has a certain freakish value too. It's noty often we get serious tropical storms up here. We do get bad Nor Easters though.
