Discovery Channel has created a tradition with Shark Week that has become very popular. Its so popular that it is now being copied....by NatGeoWild....with a sense of humor:

AdWeek (http://www.adweek.com/news/television/hilarious-promo-sharkfest-bites-shark-week-where-it-hurts-165531) called attention to the new “SharkFest” promo, which features comedian Rory Scovel (http://www.roryscovel.com/) owning up to the way Nat Geo Wild is overtly trying to muddy the waters and steal “Shark Week’s” thunder.
“We want you to confuse the two. And you will. And we don’t care—because it gets us ratings,” Scovel says. “We’re going to continue to do it” in the hopes that you “accidentally watch us.”
SharkFest: Yeah, maybe it’s not our idea. Who cares? Just watch it.” SharkFest: It’s on the same time as the other thing. On Nat Geo Wild.”

I think the sharks are assembling near NC in time for Shark Week. Maybe someone should install an underwater TV further away from the swimmers.

'For the fourth time in two weeks someone has been attacked by a shark off a North Carolina beach. Despite this recent surge, experts say that such shark attacks are rare.

An 8-year-old boy was bitten by a shark Wednesday while swimming in knee-deep water in Surf City, N.C., the Associated Press reported (http://bigstory.ap.org/article/d43c4bc01a3f45cc8ab4e59322377e88/shark-bites-8-year-old-boy-nc-no-warning-swimmers).

Town Manager Larry Bergman said that the boy had minor wounds on his lower leg, heel, and ankle.'

Can't they net off the swimming areas?

PolWatch

I think they do that in Australia....but I don't think the shark attacks happen often enough in NC to justify it.

I think the barriers really only work with the big sharks. It doesn't seem as if big sharks are the issue off NC.

'The massive white shark (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/features/fl-shark-week-cuba-waters-20150624-story.html) was caught off the northern coast of the island nearly 70 years ago, according to the Sun Sentinel. Six fishermen hooked the shark in the waters north of Cojimar, and El Monstruo was documented in black and white photographs that still survive. From those images, experts have estimated that the giant white shark could have weighed as much as 7,000 pounds.

El Monstruo will feature in the Shark Week episode Tiburones: Sharks of Cuba, which also marks the first time that the long-running event has filmed in the island nation. Scientists from both Sarasota’s Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium as well as Cuba’s Center for Coastal Ecosystems Research are featured in the episode, which sees them attempting to track great white, mako, tiger, and hammerhead sharks off the island’s coast.
Though the giant great white shark seems hardly believable, its existence has been confirmed by more than just a series of photographs. For the episode, Shark Week producers interviewed Osvaldo “Ova” Carnero, who was just a boy when the white shark was caught and witnessed El Monstruo with his own eyes.
“My brothers and my mother took me there and made me sit on the its head. It was pretty cold,” he recalled. “All the fishermen and their families came down. They were excited because they had never seen such a big animal in Cojimar.”

Chloe - I saw an interesting theory on what is causing the increase in shark attacks worldwide. Researchers have discovered a very effective shark repellent. It contains the scent of rotting sharks. Some researchers are theorizing that the shark finning boats dropping off large numbers of dead/rotting sharks in international waters. The scent drives the sharks into shallow water, away from the odor.

Maybe this research will encourage more people to demand that shark finning stop. Instead of shark fin soup for people, we are now people soup for sharks.

As to dead sharks due to shark fins causing the problems, are they claiming dead sharks are all over the various countries coasts all over the world?

From what I was able to find out last year, it seems maybe 7 of the ships based in China actually do this. Most of them are busy with normal fishing.

Its an interesting theory. Anything that can help reduce the slaughter I'd be on board with.

I am skeptical. I have heard that waters along the east coast are saltier than normal so the sharks don't mind getting so close.

That is one the suggested reasons for the rash of recent attacks in NC. There seems to be an increase in attacks worldwide that don't have the same salt content issue. Increased people in the water was offered as another reason....not just the numbers but that the sharks have lost some fear of humans.

I expect they never had any fear of humans. But there are more people in the water.

One of the Sharkweek's shows was tracking this shark called Scar- he was hooked by a fisherman and ripped the hook out and has a nasty looking scare from the edge of the left side of his mouth down his side.

One demonstration involved spear fishing. Sharks that were in areas where spear fishing was common responded to the popping sound of the spear guns like ringing a dinner bell. They associated the sound with free fish dinners. Those who were in areas with little/no spear fishing fled from the noise. It seemed pretty conclusive that they can and do learn new behaviors.

The demonstration of the shark repellent made with the scent of rotting sharks was pretty impressive. I can believe that could be a factor in driving sharks closer to shore in some areas.
