Repeating a message he issued in the White House Rose Garden earlier this week, Obama urged lawmakers to pass multibillion-dollar temporary funding bills for aviation and highway projects, or risk heaping more pain on the economy.
"If it's delayed for just 10 days, we will lose nearly $1 billion in highway funding that we can never get back. And if we wait even longer, almost 1 million workers could be in danger of losing their jobs over the next year," he said.
The law authorizing aviation ticket taxes to pay for airport construction under the Federal Aviation Administration expires on September 16. A law directing gasoline taxes to underwrite road construction grants expires on September 30. Both must be extended to continue funding while lawmakers craft legislation authorizing the programs over longer periods.....snip~
Obama wants temporary funding bills passed again. Once again Obama is showing that poltical game while railing against those that are playing party politics. So he says. Problem here is that the Republicans agree with the extension of the Highway Bill. So there is no opposition for the spending. Still it is another Temporary measure which does not solve the problem.
Shouldn't we allow the states to collect those taxes and not let the Federal government be the one collecting on such. The states are responsible for maintaining Federal Highways through their states anyways. Moreover both sides here are only agreeing on extensions. Which to me gives them wiggle room to play with the money. Also why does all of Obama's Shovel ready jobs include Union Workers? What about the other poor and needy that cant afford to pay Union Dues and sit around in Union Halls waiting for work. People today are in need at the moment. They can't be sitting around hoping work will come around.
