This has been done recently in Brazil. This UK individual wants to release the Mosquito in Florida and then the South. To try and kill West Nile Mosquito's and and other Dangerous Disease Carriers. The Theory was to let these ones out to mate with the females. Which then once laying it's eggs would cause all females to die. Plus kill the males off eventualy as they say.

Now comes the problem with what can happen to humans if they get bit by these Mosquitoes

Florida Keys residents appear to be gaining momentum in their campaign to prevent Oxford-based Oxitec in the UK from releasing genetically engineered mosquitoes to help control the population of wild mosquitoes that can carry Dengue fever.

What Are Oxitec's Genetically Engineered Mosquitoes

The Florida release of the mosquitoes would not be the first for Oxitec. The company has released the mosquitoes previously. In the fall of 2009 they did the open air release of the engineered mosquitoes in the Cayman Islands (http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2010/11/gm-mosquito-trial-strains-ties.html), and followed up with a larger study the next summer. The company was criticized for pursuing the studies under somewhat of a "hushed" process but Oxitec emphasized that the releases were done in conjunction with Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) of the Cayman Islands and claim that the lack of newsworthiness is the only reason few outside the Cayman Islands knew of it. The company reported an 80% reduction in the Aedes aegypti mosquito population in the 16-hectare test site where the mosquitoes were released.

The same mosquitoes were also released in Brazil in Feb 2011 (http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/moscamed-prepares-for-next-phase-in-the-development-of--oxitecs-transgenic-mosquitoes-in-brazil-161960705.html) and Malaysia in Jan 2011 (http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2011/01/gm-mosquito-release-in-malaysia.html).

One of the important issues this situation has brought to light is the lack of regulatory oversight for these sort of genetically engineered organisms. Criticism that Oxitec has approached field testing of the mosquitoes with too much secrecy should, perhaps, be tempered by the fact there are not clear guidelines how to proceed with this sort of testing. In all cases, it seems that Oxitec has worked with local authorities to obtain the necessary approvals to proceed with the testing.

Reportedly, the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District have subsequently contacted multiple government agencies (http://www.miaminewtimes.com/2012-05-31/news/can-genetically-modified-mosquitoes-keep-dengue-fever-away-from-key-west/5/), including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Agency to try to find the one that has responsibility for this sort of program. None have accepted jurisdiction. Oxitec and the Mosquito Control District are waiting to hear from the FDA.....snip~

These soldiers are the first of a new kind of creature - "autocidal" maniacs genetically modified to wipe out their own kind without harming other creatures. The first animals being targeted with these "living pesticides" are disease-carrying mosquitoes and crop-munching caterpillars, but the approach should work with just about any animal - from invasive fish and frogs to rats and rabbits. If it is successful, it could transform the way we think about genetically engineered animals.....snip~

Except for that part about making humans sterile .....they might be on to something. Like the creation of a new disease. :undecided:

Playing with fire here. Everybody familiar with those ugly black 'grackles' that are causing havoc in all major US cities? Can you remember back when when those ugly birds weren't around? That's because we brought them here from Africa in the 1980's because they eat a certain species of boll weevils. Come to find out, they began to kill off other species of birds because they multiply so much faster.

Now we have a new 'pest bird' -- with nobody to blame but ourselves.

I figure the new mosquitos bite will turn us all into werewolves.

Well, ya never know what will happen when you start messing with Mother Nature! ;)

Well at least we know they are starting in Florida. So if we has to.....we could end up just putting a Wall around the That State. Kinda make it's into a prison. For Life and Death Row Inmates. They can live and be free. Just have to watch out for those bloodsuckers.

They've been trying to spray them in Big D... but we've actually gotten some rain which has delayed things. I think they start the aerial spraying tonight. We don't believe in 'reforming' 'em... we believe in killin 'em! :smiley-char092:

This is what they say.....huh? Yeah I heard that down in Dallas. As you guys have had some major deaths with West Nile Virus Carriers. Indiana is Right behind you in that Dept.

Believe it or not, it's because we've had so much rain this summer. I even had to break down and empty my dogs' swimming pool so it didn't turn into a skeeter breeding ground!

Get this... most of the deaths have been in the Park Cities area (nicest part of town) and on the local news 'Tell It To Tim' segment on Fri where callers get to sound off on topics... there were a few saying city officials were racists for spraying the white part of town first.

LOL, some people look for anything to complain about, don't they?

Yeah, it's pretty dangerous if you're outside a lot. Doubt if I'll get bit dashing from my a/c home to my a/c car to my a/c office.

Goose does live in FL, but due to his business... I bet he doesn't have a prob with mosquitos!

Mosquitoes get stay from court...

Court suspends release of GMO mosquitoes in Cayman Islands
Jul. 18, 2016 — A plan to fight the mosquito that spreads Zika and other illnesses by releasing genetically modified versions of the insect in the Cayman Islands has been put on hold following a court challenge.

The Cayman mosquito control unit was going to start releasing GMO mosquitoes produced by British biotech firm Oxitec last week. A government statement announced the delay Monday.

Arguments are expected Tuesday on whether to extend a temporary injunction until a court can conduct a formal review of the project sought by opponents.

Plans call for releasing millions of modified male mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti. Males don't bite but would mate with females and produce offspring that die before reaching adulthood. Opponents say they have not been given enough information on any potential risks.

U.S. closer to testing engineered mosquitoes that could fight Zika
Fri Aug 5, 2016 - U.S. health regulators have cleared the way for a trial of genetically modified mosquitoes in Florida that can reduce mosquito populations, potentially offering a new tool to fight the local spread of Zika and other viruses.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Friday that a field trial testing Intrexon Corp's (XON.N) genetically engineered mosquitoes would not have a significant impact on the environment. The announcement came as Florida officials grapple with the first cases of local Zika transmission in the continental United States. Florida health authorities have identified 16 Zika cases spread by local mosquitoes and are ramping up aerial pesticide spraying of a Miami neighborhood where all of the people are believed to have been infected. Pregnant women are most at risk from Zika, which can cause a rare birth defect in fetuses called microcephaly. The Zika outbreak was first detected last year in Brazil and has spread rapidly in the Americas, primarily through mosquito bite. Intrexon's Oxitec unit has been working for years to kick off a trial in the Florida Keys to assess the effectiveness of its mosquitoes to reduce levels of the insects that carry diseases, including Zika, dengue, Yellow Fever and chikungunya.

The Oxitec method involves inserting an engineered gene into male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. When they mate with female mosquitoes in the wild, they produce offspring that cannot survive to adulthood. The FDA has been reviewing Oxitec's application for use of its technology as an investigational new animal drug. Its environmental assessment helps clear the way for the company to begin a clinical trial in Key Haven, Florida that would test whether the genetically modified mosquitoes will suppress the wild populations over time. Results of that trial would be used to support approval of the company's technology, a process that could take more than a year. Similar testing in Brazil, Panama and the Cayman Islands have shown that the Oxitec mosquitoes can reduce local Aedes aegypti populations by more than 90 percent.

'THEY ARE USING US'

To begin the trial, however, the company must first await the results of a vote in the Nov. 8 general election seeking community approval for the trial. Oxitec Chief Executive Hadyn Parry said in a conference call that the vote is non-binding, and the decision about whether to proceed is up to the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, the local body responsible for mosquito control. Community support in the vote is not guaranteed. In Key Haven, a suburb of large, waterfront homes near Key West where the trial is slated to take place, yard signs have popped up declaring "no consent" to the release of genetically modified mosquitoes. Kathryn Watkins, a Key Haven resident recruited by trial opponents, is seeking election to the board overseeing the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District. "It just has everyone scared," Watkins said, adding that local residents see themselves as unwilling test subjects. "The genetically modified male has to mate with a wild female, and the wild female has to bite us in order to lay eggs," she said. "They are using us in this trial without consent," she added.

As his company awaits the vote, Parry said he intends to ask the FDA for an emergency-use authorization that would make the product available to help battle Zika in the United States. The FDA has approved several diagnostic products under this designation. But it is not likely to be granted under current statutes. FDA spokeswoman Theresa Eisenman said there is no "fast-track" designation for new animal drugs, and emergency-use provisions in the applicable law do not apply to animal drugs. The World Health Organization has declared a global health emergency over Zika's link to microcephaly, a condition marked by abnormally small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems. The agency has suggested that alternative approaches to fighting mosquitoes that carry the virus might be an important way to suppress mosquito populations.

Where did Obama-Clinton place the illegal aliens they brought in? My guess is districts that gave Republicans victories.
