I finished This is England so I'm reading up on the Falklands War. What a bizarre situation. I didn't realize casualties and more specifically prisoners taken were so many:

Argentina:

649 killed
1,068 wounded
11,313 taken prisoner
---------
1 cruiser
1 submarine
4 cargo vessels
2 patrol boats
1 spy trawler
---------
25 helicopters
35 fighters
2 bombers
4 transports
25 COIN aircraft
9 armed trainers

U.K.:

258 killed
775 wounded
115 taken prisoner
---------
2 destroyers
2 frigates
1 LSL landing ship
1 LCU amphibious craft
1 container ship
---------
24 helicopters
10 fighters

Interesting also that Israel decided to side with Argentina over the U.S. and the U.K.

11,000+ Argentinians captured!

Apparently it's still talked about a lot in Argentina, not so much in the U.K.

Before I saw the movie I thought only a few soldiers if any actually died. It was more than I thought but it wasn't exactly Napoleonic...

Argentina got shut down but, according to an Argentine guy I worked with, it was a pretty silly war. I wonder how many Argentines felt that way?

I suppose it was nice to see the British Empire throw down one last time. 8)

Heck yeah! That's why I threw that Newsweek cover up there. 8)

From what I read the Argentina government (military) at the time deliberately provoked an altercation to try and distract the people from the crappy economy and domestic problems. It didn't work and the junta collapsed soon after. Don't mess with The Queen!

Yeah, that's what inspired my last remark.

Right and a lot of people saw through it. Thatcher was a badass too. 8)

I will add that to my reading list, thanks.

That is an ambitious subject for just one book but I see there are glowing reviews.

I haven't read it yet but I have been meaning to.

It's not too ambitious for its size. You can easily pick a book on the Roman Empire, WW2 or some other enormously complex subject. Why not the British Empire?

Isn't the British navy still en-route to the Falklands?

Yeah, I was looking at the map of the journey for the fleet on Wiki. That was a loooong trip.

I dunno, just the rise and fall and everything in between, seems like it could be a four volume set.

It may be because I am remembering this:

http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Fall-Third-Reich-History/dp/0671728687

Checks in at about 1250 pages and that's only about thirteen years

Depends on the themes and what's focused on. I've read several shorter books on the Roman army and the Roman Republic/Empire.

I recently read a book on Hittite Empire which was in reality more of a confederation of sorts. "Recently" as in a few years ago. Anyway, what specifically were you looking for?

There is a book out by O. R. Gurney and I think one is out by an Author last name Graves. Out by CL is one of the Major Universties that has the Top Historical Info on the Hittites. The California Institute Of Ancient Studies.

BTW, LoVE, the "Hittites" of the bible were neo-Hittite cultures. The Hittie Empire collapsed before there are any records (archaeological or texctual) of Israelites in the Levant.
