View Full Version : Should tPF add and enforce "trolling" rules?

Captain Obvious

Simple "yes" or "no", I don't think there is any in-between that carves out one action and approves others or singles out individuals because they don't use the "thanks" button.

I will also unsticky it after a while.

Absolutely NOT!
FFS the other thread now has over 330 responses most of which are attempts to simply define what "trolling" is.
Enforce a no trolling rule and this board becomes a reflection of the mods' opinion and as such becomes utterly useless to all of us...including the mods.

I say absolutely yes in some cases, and absolutely no, in other cases, depending on whether the moderator is a friend or foe of the offender in question.

And therein lies the problem as I'm sure was your intent to illustrate. :wink20:

Let's keep it this way. I'm a troll, reporting in.

All posters find chronic trolling by known characters very annoying, but only on the opposition side of things. One's own trolls are always somehow endearing characters with that spark of lively mischief that brings one to mind those cute and plucky 'Little Rascal' tykes of the ancient television show.

But there is a difference between trolling to agitate the opposition in general and in launching specific personal attacks against another poster. A healthy political forum stamps down hard on personal attacks whether they are being launched by someone on the Left or the Right. As long as responses are kept to the general rather than to the specific, where negative replies are concerned, there should not be a problem.

Yes enforce rules against trolls.

don't create an anything goes forum because nothing will ever get discussed, only derailed and insults will fly.

there are 2 trolls here, that I know have been banned elsewhere for that exact reason.

Think about it like this:

your in a movie theater and 2 dumb ass people keep laughing, talking, & getting phone calls during the movie and ruining the movie for everyone else. Now everybody here is gonna tell me, y'all really gonna put up with that crap? Hell no your not. Your going to do 1 of 2 things:

1) either tell them to shut the hell up or get out
or
2) go get management to remove them.

Option 3: you get up and walk out and seek a refund.

nobody would tolerate that nonsense, so why would you tolerate a fool here who can't discuss a subject, but simply comes into a thread to derail it and run it into the ground? If you want "adult" discussions to take place and for this place to grow & get quality memebership, you have to take out the trash. Having this "anything goes" mentality isn't going to grow this place, it's gonna make it worse, until the good members throw their arms up and simple walk away and go elsewhere.

dont give idiots a voice, when what they need to do is be thrown into a corner until they can quit acting like babies and behave like adults.

No you don’t understand. Trolls don’t bother me, but a mod and their were a few at another site that would sign my name (and others) to anonymous reputation buttons ( because you couldn’t tell then who it came from) rude insults and slimy remarks wasn’t funny. The way I found out and exposed them is when they sent it to someone they didn’t know was an internet friend and we were playing arguing. That’s how they ran off members. That would be like all of a sudden a person on my friends list getting a nasty remark signed by me saying @@@@ off ect. Something that is not in my nature to say. That person automatically thinks I am full of it. Get my drift? The person that owned the site had no idea what they were doing and why they lost so many people, ended up selling the site because it came a ghost town. One of the ones they banned did this, but many were involved.

I don't see this happening here, just saying I am glad he is not a member.

Akula

It can't be done.
Everyone knows who are the agitators and who are (more or less) "regular", "normal" people.
All the trolls do is hit and run. They flood the board with all the DNC talking points of the day, ignore requests for citations or links because they don't have any...and when they get backed into a corner they run away to the next thread and resume the name calling and propaganda.

The way to handle it is the ignore button.
What's the saying?

"
Trying to reason with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon.
No matter how good you are at chess, the pigeon is just going to shit on the board, knock over the pieces, and strut around absolutely convinced of his victory."

I wonder how many of the four who want trolling banned are trolls. Trolls never think they're trolls. It's those others.

I don't troll. But people like Cigar, truth matters, & Head of Joaquin are absolutely useless trolls on this site. Very seldom can they carry on a civilized conversation to any degree. Hell, Head of Joaquin has been banned at other sites for this very reason. Until this site takes control of the idiots, it's going to be a free for all with very little membership. Civilized people don't want to come to a place that is run like a brothel.

go to the Democrat/Republican sections, read the first 8-10 topics in each and see how often those 3 people actual discuss the topics presented. It's a joke.

I mean if the site wants to take it to the gutter by all means, it's their site. But if the intent of this site is to increase traffic and maintain an active audience, you can't continue to allow trolls to reign day after day. Nobody wants to sit and read idiots off topic, petty insults all day.

just sayin. Do what y'all want. When I feel the need to go into the gutter I will just come here to post.

I'm starting to think there ought to be some kind of "no spamming" or "no derailing"rule...
Naturally, sometimes, one sentence replies are appropriate..even one word replies occasionally...but when people consistently, purposely try to derail a conversation or pretend confusion in order to sidetrack a discussion, there should be a procedure to deal with that....
It's a judgment call and up to the moderators..who are appointed by some random procedure according to who is friends with whom.....and THAT'S another issue, but there are too many agitators now that are skirting the rules just to be inflammatory and serve their egos and "needyness".

Can you supply an example?

Please note that we are, or were talking about trolls with an overwhelming decision to let them troll.

There are specific rules, though -- http://thepoliticalforums.com/threads/6236-The-Political-Forums-Revised-Rules-and-Regulations

The first of which is a clear ban on threats of any kind.

The distinction is significant and I can assure you if a threat is reported or detected, the member will be dealt with.
