Dear Members,

In the town hall meeting we had several weeks ago, many expressed their desire to see more moderation in the "On the Serious Side" section of the forum. We moderators have read your concerns and are prepared to comply with this request. Much like tPF, the aim will be to have a place for serious discussion free of flamebait trolling, off-topic distractions and personal attacks. Somewhat like tPF, OP reports will carry added weight to forum rule moderation, but moderators will decide when and how to act. Most likely such actions will be at minimum to thread ban the poster and remove the distracting post, but additional action could be taken, and frequent violators will be infracted.

In order to make identification of OtSS easier, threads and posts in these areas will be highlighted by a star icon. These stars will appear both in the What's New section of the forum as well as on the right sidebar of the home page where new threads and posts are listed.

To give members a chance to become acclimated to these changes, we will start with moving posts and issuing thread bans only. Infractions will be issued to repeat offenders once this adjustment period has ended, one week from today.

Thank you all for your contributions and feedback!

This sounds wonderful. Does it affect how the rest of the forums are to be moderated? If so, how?

Well, there is talk of limiting posters who think their style is so clever as to not rise to the level of trolling. You know the type: the overtly two-faced teacher's pet suckup who ends up being the one who throws more spitballs in the class than anyone else.

Is it possible to put a general political topics forum down there also?

Yes, the subject has come up in the V.I.P. room and we will discuss how it could be implemented. For now, our plan is to see how the forum reacts to the changes before doing more, but know that you're not alone with this request.

We also expect to have more town hall threads in the future, so that all members can give us feedback on what they'd like to see.

No, for now the rest of the forums will be moderated as they have been.

The one on one debate room doesn't seem to have much activity. Perhaps it could be "re-purposed" for a "general political topics forum."

OTSS is like all the tangent stuff.

I don't get the correlation, just make the niche topics more moderation enforced?

Members have already begun posting political topics in this area: http://thepoliticalforums.com/forums/21-The-Economics-and-Political-Science-Room

The moderators have agreed to let threads in that area stay put, as long as they are an honest attempt at discussing a topic.

We're really trying to strike the right balance for as many members as possible.

1. Direct election of some vips, rather than their being selected by vips. Put a time limit on terms. No lifetime appointments. Admin could select the balance to make sure there is minority representation.

2. Mods selected by vips, not mods.

3. Self selection is bad.

4. Eligible voters can be determined by forum activity/points. That would eliminate ballot stuffing by registering new accounts.

Just a thought. I want this forum to be all it can be.
