Written by Doctor Christoper Davidson, Reader in Middle East Politics and a Fellow at Durham University, the book Shadow Wars: The Secret Struggle for the Middle East traces the rise of Islamic extremist groups like AQ and ISIS to the overarching foreign policy strategy being pursued by western capitalist interests. An excerpt from the book states the central thesis:

It's worth noting that Doctor Davidson is covering well-trodden ground, as the role of western imperialism in the rise of Islamic terrorist groups is amply documented and analyzed. However, what is new about his analysis in the integration of this into the modern context of the Arab Spring and the "regime change" policies in countries like Iraq, Libya, and Syria.

The extremists have been suppressed for the last several hundred years. They are taking advantage of the power vacuum in the ME.

What has been done in the middle east, has been done so poorly. It's like someone new to chess. Trying one move after another with, it looks like, no forethought. As one move fails another is tried again with each failure they haven't stopped to look at what will be the cost.
Politicians here have chosen the most despicable to believe and support, sent our boys and girls to fight wars for the worst of them, wars that they don't themselves want to fight. Each administration had it's own expensive folly one worse than the one before. Both parties out doing the one before throwing lives and treasure away destroying countries and people as they went.

And their interests are who can be at the top of the heap. Read the extremists handbook to find out.
