Senate Republicans Tuesday may have blocked President Obama's jobs bill, but a new poll suggests that's not what a majority of Americans want.

Nearly two-thirds of the respondents to a survey from NBC/Wall Street Journal voiced their approval when pollsters were told them the details of the president's "American Jobs Act"-- including that it would cut payroll taxes, fund new road construction, and extend unemployment benefits. NBC reports that 63 percent of respondents said they favored the bill, with just 32 percent opposing it.

But the numbers for the bill only spike when Americans learn about its provisions in some detail. When NBC pollsters asked for a simple up-or-down appraisal of the bill, minus any policy details, the same group of respondents expressed less than half the level of support that they later showed. "When asked simply if Congress should pass the legislation or not, 30 percent of respondents answer yes, while 22 percent say no; 44 percent have no opinion," according to NBC.

One element of the bill in particular enjoyed wide support--Obama's proposal to remove tax loopholes for the wealthiest Americans. Sixty-four percent of respondents said it is a "good idea" to raise taxes on the wealthy and corporations. Thirty-one percent said it was a bad idea.

Again it is the Republicans attacking the middle class and keeping the status quo for the richest of the rich. Ignoring the will of the AMERICAN PEOPLE to line their pockets. Down with the GOP!

That is incorrect.....Republicans did not block Obama's bill.....

The cleverly named bill was sold as a paid-for, bipartisan package of cures for the country's anemic job market. But the Senate soundly defeated the measure, leaving it eight votes shy of the 60 that Obama needed just to get the Senate to consider it. Worst of all for Obama were the defections of two of his fellow Democrats, which limited the bill to getting more than a bare majority, as well as the declarations from several more that they would vote against the package if the Senate ever did consider it for an up-or down vote.

even Obama’s fellow Democrats seem to have developed sufficient spending fatigue to put the brakes on new outlays, while the most moderate Democrats say the economy will never recover as long as the deficit continues to spiral out of control.

But at the very moment that Obama was warning about Republicans blocking his legislation, Jim Webb, the Democratic senator from Virginia, was explaining from the floor why he opposed the measure.

Although Webb voted with the Democrats to end the filibuster, Sens. Bill Nelson and Jon Tester, two moderate Democrats up for reelection, joined the GOP to block the bill. Tester said he wanted more infrastructure spending and fewer tax breaks in the package. Nelson said the half-trillion-dollar price tag was too rich for his blood.

Other Democrats voted with the White House on Tuesday, but said they'd oppose the bill if the Senate ever voted on it.....snip~
