They're a great band. I didn't appreciate them enough until I read about the National Liberation Front in Algiers and terrorism that took place in the Casbah. Prior to that I vaguely knew a Casbah was some type of city in Islamic countries.
Whatchu playing Mister D? I'm down for some Stravinsky or Chopin if that's your flavor!

My father was there and in the Belgian Congo. He was wounded as part of Dutch UN peacekeeping force. Don't ask me why he was attached to a Dutch outfit.
The video for Rock the Casbah is one of my earliest childhood memories of MTV. That was back in the 80s when MTV used to actually play music. I was 6 I believe when that video first aired. I used to watch MTV for hours every afternoon. I hate their version of I Fought the Law though. It's dreadful.

Hardly ever mentions it and I pried a little as a kid but when I grew up I realized there must be a reason for that...
MTV sucked by the mid 1990s, IMO. They had this show called The Headbangers Ball which I tried to catch when I was into metal but that was the end of my interest.

Yeah, the older I get, the more I am like my dad. I don't like crowds very much.
I do like live music though, especially in a small intimate setting.
My son was at the Cleveland Clinic recently and a woman was going around playing guitar and singing requests for patients. We couldn't think of anything to request, so she played Sweet Child 'O Mine, and Sweet Home Alabama. Definitely NOT two of my faves. But she was fantastic, very enjoyable. :)

I sometimes wish musicians and their fans would just stick to the music. Activism is overdone.
Darnielle does some activism, but most of it's non controversial. I went to his concert at Breastfest where all the proceeds went to breast cancer charities. It was a hell of a concert poster, might I add.

Yeah, he's a vegan, and he's done a few things for his farm charities. I'm a pretty active member of the Mountain Goats forums, where a bunch of us made a music compilation, sold copies at his shows and donated all the proceeds to sponsor a goat at some farm house charity.
If you want a free download though, you can get it here. My friends and I made track 5 "Mars":

I don't really care about vegan causes from an ethical standpoint but staying away from meat can be healthy and helps reduce the amount of biomass that is wasted on feed for animals.

Whatchu playing Mister D? I'm down for some Stravinsky or Chopin if that's your flavor!
Excellent .
Also Gustav Mahler . One of my favs.
First time I heard Giya Kancheli in Russia --- he is Georgian and still alive--- I literally shrunk in my seat . Makes Stravinsky's Rite of Spring seem peaceful .

I wasn't referring specifically to the podcasts but he tells a good story.
I think that is true of most western Europeans and he touches on that gap, or even indifference, if I recall correctly.

One of my favorites from the Pogues is below. This one was done in conjunction with a famous English singer-songwriter name Kristy Macoll. Tragic story really, she was killed in a boating accident. She was in the water with her daughter, a boat was racing towards them and she had just enough time to throw her daughter out of the way before the boat hit and killed her.

Counting Crows relatively recently released a sort of b-side cover album. I heard them on Stern, they did Carry That Weight, it sounded pretty good.
That singer (forgot his name) is pretty talented.

I can't even Händel how good this is.
All puns aside though I do like this piece.

It's great if I'm in the right kind of mood. I like the pieces for harpsichord better in general though:

Not bad. I like me some Jazz. Coltrane's Om is probably my favorite though. I love how chaotic it gets. Same with Ascension.

Excellent piece. I have this on a collection of Handel harp suites.
Yeah, the brass creates a totally different emotional atmosphere.

Nice portrait. He's quite a bit older on the cover of mine. I actually prefer the harp to the piano but I understand it's not as versatile.

Jazz...it has to be live. I don't care for recordings. I do, however, enjoy country blues.

Me too. It can sound great even in a more modern arrangement:
