This French offensive marked the first large scale assault on a German trench system in the First World War. It would last throughout the winter only ending in mid March 1915. Casualties would be approximately 90,000 per side which, believe it or not, was significantly less sanguinary than the carnage of the previous Fall.
Trenches saved many lives but turned the war from one of manuever into a mutual siege.
