Mark Nov. 8 on your calendar. A huge asteroid that could potentially threaten Earth in the far future will pass close by as astronomers around the world watch and measure.

This space rock is asteroid 2005 YU55, a veritable mini-world roughly 1,300 feet (400 meters) wide — nearly four football fields across — that will zoom by Earth inside the orbit of the moon.

At its closest approach, the asteroid will pass within 201,700 miles (325,000 kilometers) of Earth at 6:28 p.m. EDT (2228 GMT) on Nov. 8. The average distance between Earth and the moon is 240,000 miles (386,242 km).

Due to its size and proximity, YU55 was classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" several years ago. Its upcoming flyby is another wake-up call — an express mail reminder that humanity resides on a sitting duck of a planet.....snip~

WTF.....is the World of the Media downplaying this??! Inside the Orbit of the Moon and the Earth. Uhm Look at the numbers. That is not leaving much room for a margin of error. Note in the piece they admit not seeing the other that just missed us coming out of nowheres. That was CQ1 which they waited to broadcast anything about until after it had missed.

Could there be somthing behind this asteroid we do not see? What if hits the Moon and being the size of a small planet cause the moon to shift. What if scrapes along our upper atmosphere? What are going to be the cause of tidal effects with this planet size asteroid passing between the earth and the moon? How will affect our weather patterns? One thing is clear it is going to pass between us and it will interfere with the gravitational affect bewtween the moon and the Earth.

I see Interference with the Earths magnetic fields, destruction, Hurricanes, Tsunami's, Tornadoes, The flooding of rivers, and earthquakes with impacts like we have never seen before. Will winter last longer? Will this cause the polar axis to shift more where scientists state this event happens every 300k years. Thats a complete reversal and they state it wall cause major damage to the planet. Call it restructuring. I think a Couple of Volcanoes will pop too. http://politirant.com/Smileys/oldrant/f_zen.gif

You know these things are disturbing (yeah, duh! :D) but it seems like it's happening a lot now. This is at least the third one I've heard about.

Sooner or later one of these things isn't going to miss! It'd be nice if we had some kind of defense system or plan set up to neutralize it. Maybe we could combine our tech with the Chinese and use one of those Virgin Galactic ships since our Shuttle is no more :(

If the world was going to end next week, would you want to know? Would there be a lot of violence, looting and rioting?

Yeah, Pictures by the World of the Media.....So all can see the size of this thing. Knowing next time back around it's going to hit us. Unless we are able to do something about it.

Looks like a safe trajectory, we'd know if there were a real threat but clearly the media are concealing the facts. In fact, last year another asteroid passed close by, saw it on CNN the day after and I'm like a day late and now its news! We do have a couple of spy satellites positioned over 25,000 miles out.

Well we are still here.....but not one peep out of the World of Media today? Yesterday I mean. Didnt hear if it took out any satelites or even a piece of the moon. So no pics of this Asteroid that is the size of a planet. Nothing to show how it passed between the Earth and the Moon. Not a peep. I also Counted for the World Clock as most were a day ahead of us.

Another thing I was or wanted to question was the Polar Axis Shift. If this would anyway affect any of that or the Earths Magnetic Field. Or Will it affect the tides with the Moon and its passing. Like they say it's suppose to be the size of a small planet. With what the numbers they were showing. There wasnt much room for a margin of Error.

Did you see that piece on the laser they are working on. Suppose to be able to tear a hole in the fabric of Space. What interesting to note that they will have 3 protos online before the end of 2015. Until they can complet the more powerful one. IMO they are getting ready for something like an Asteroid thats coming if not this one which is suppose to return and again allegedly hit the earth or the Moon the next time. Then some other thats coming.

You need to go to a science news website and not people.com ;D

NASA is tracking it closely, I bet you can find it online

Tracking of the aircraft carrier-sized asteroid will begin at 9:30 a.m. local time (PDT) on Nov. 4, using the massive 70-meter (230-foot) Deep Space Network antenna, and last for about two hours. The asteroid will continue to be tracked by Goldstone for at least four hours each day from Nov. 6 through Nov. 10. Radar observations from the Arecibo Planetary Radar Facility in Puerto Rico will begin on Nov. 8, the same day the asteroid will make its closest approach to Earth at 3:28 p.m. PST.

Good thing it didnt go between the earth and the moon like they said. Was it still the size of a small planet? Yep if it clips the moon that will affect us. Specially Tides.

Conley
11-08-2011, 07:46 PM
I'm fairly certain if it even clipped the Moon we would all end up dead. Not instantly but everything would get thrown out of whack. The debris would block out the sun too, and we'd die like the dinos, cold and dark. :(

Conley
11-08-2011, 07:51 PM
It's nowhere near the size of a planet, thankfully.

Since it's so small even if it hit the moon there would be no impact on life here on Earth:

"As for little 2005 YU55: If it had run a collision course with the moon it would have caused a good-sized crater -- about four kilometers across, according to Don Yeomans, director of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program. That's not nothing, but it isn't much of anything, either."

http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/11/what-if-a-large-asteroid-were-to-hit-the-moon/248129/

edit: So, obviously I was wrong. Again. ;D

Captain Obvious

The asteroid was the size of a city block. Impacting the Earth wouldn't have caused all life to cease but it would have sucked to some degree. Might have made the Iranian mess a little less important.

Hitting the moon would have fucked up tidal fishing strategy.

There was no concern about this asteroid hitting anything at this point. Just a close fly-by.

An interesting point, it's traveling at the speed of 29k miles per hour. Wouldn't it be scientifically interesting if we could have landed a probe on this thing and just let it ride it throughout the solar system?

Just a thought.

Wouldn't we lose contact with the probe at some point? I'd imagine it has a limited range.

We would but we could have it keep recording while out of range, store the info, and transmit is back the next time the asteroid swung by our neighborhood. It's a pretty cool idea.

Captain Obvious

I dunno.

All this shit is orbiting the sun. Tons of asteroids and shit like that which might plow into us at any point. It's all orbiting the sun so it's all within our solar system so I don't think losing contact with it might be the issue.

The bigger issue is time. I probably answered my own question but setting a satellite into movement isn't a big issue. Just send it up there, but how long do the energy sources allow contact?

In space, a vacuum, movement isn't a problem. Get the thing moving and it moves forever until something stops it. Maneuvering it is another issue which is why I'm thinking landing a probe on an asteroid like this might have an advantage.
