When we fire up our local electric turbines, we start the process with 12 cylinder diesel motors which in turn start the turbines rotating, In relatively short order, the turbines which burn 30+ gallons of fuel per minute, overtake the diesel engines which slow down and cool. That in itself requires complicated engineering. I can't imagine the gearing that would be required to run both efficiently at the same time. Hope they've got it right. Not holding my breath.

We had one seize up because a crew member literally tossed a wrench into the gear chamber. sabotage
They had to cut through 8 decks and the flight deck to pull it out and replace it.
Replacing any turbine is no small task.

A few years back, we had one throw some blades. It had to be pulled, and shipped by rail car to someplace in Texas for a rebuild. Well in excess of a million bucks and required an old fart like us to oversee the reassembly where perfect balance is required. Both ours are relatively small, producing almost 20mw an hour each. You're right, ours are toys compared to the ones on those boats. I want to come see the layout, but right now my son doesn't consider it safe (for others) to have me behind the wheel. I've got a brick ramp, lights, cork and a paint pump with your name on it. I'll look for any additional goodies to haul along. Doc said a couple of weeks before stent surgery, followed by another three months of recovery to see if unplugging the clogs is helpful. Might be Spring before I'm sprung, but I'd love to come visit again!

My visit to the Cleveland Clinic was helpful, but they were looking in all the wrong places to find the problem. Go figure! A simple stress test might have gotten to the "heart" of the problem. Telling my local Dr. gal; adios!

I'll take those odds and ends...............in a few days I'll be taking a few shots and try to post them here. I was successful in incorporating your old mountain with my new one. It is a work in progress.
