    What Jefferson did means something.

It means the lessons from the NT have value in today's world even if the supernatural things are left out.

That's what people don't understand--just my opinion--because when someone says our ethics and morals are based on Christianity, what Jefferson did shows that to be true. People naturally reject the supernatural, but that doesn't have to ruin the entire story.

    Logically, it can't be true.

The Noah story, the Creation story, the tale of Sodom and Gomorrah--they're all classified as "etiological myths."

An etiological myth is one that seeks to teach a lesson through story form. The Bible is full of them, but so are many other holy books and books aren't aren't religious.

I think most Christian denominations understand and accept that many of the Old Testament stories could not have happened. A couple thousand years ago, of course, they were more believable because science had not disputed so many of them.

I believed the fundamental facts of Sodom and Gomorrah's destruction are correct even if poorly understood.

Do myths have a place in religious texts?

    Faith is different than religion.

Faith is your belief in God
Religion is your faith in an organization of men that desire power.

    You can have one.
You can have both of varying degrees of belief.
    You can have neither.

When I got done with a priest one day, he finally admitted that Noah was just a parable.
Unfortunately it just happened to be the priest that was going to marry us. Luckily he was my wife's godfather so he married us anyways.

Yes I have a problem giving up on a fight.
    Let's go Brandon !!!

Not entirely. Some parts are. Any part that identifies a chosen people is myth. Miracles are myths. But, in some texts there are other things, a smattering of history, poetry, wisdom, community rules, and the like.

People don't naturally do anything of the kind. Jefferson was a man of his time and displayed the skepticism characteristic of many intellectuals of that period. But thank you for explaining. I have a better idea of where you wanted to go with that now.
