September 15, 1963 - KKK bombs Church in Alabama

September 15, 1963 - KKK bombs Church in Alabama
On September 15, 1963, members of the Klu Klux Klan bombed a predominantly African-American church in Birmingham, Alabama during the Civil Rights Movement. The blast at the
16th Street Baptist Church killed four young girls and injured twenty other people. Despite an investigation by the F.B.I., no one was charged with responsibility for the crime until Robert Chambliss was convicted of murder in 1977. His accomplices, Thomas Blaton, Jr. and Bobby Frank Cherry, were not tried and convicted until about twenty-five years later.

Learn more about the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing and the trials of Blanton and Cherry from NPR.

On September 19, 1945, a British court sentenced to death American-born William Joyce, known as "Lord Haw-Haw," for his Nazi propaganda broadcasts during World War II. Listen to a montage of clips from Joyce's broadcasts, with Joyce's trademark introduction "Germany calling, Germany calling...". Joyce was hanged on January 6, 1946.

Today in history. No new cars for sale

September 27th, 1946 : With returning GI's and the end to the war people are trying to buy new cars with little success as many of the factories have not been converted back to automobile production, this means that any one wishing to buy a new car can expect to pay 25% more than the OPA price guides from the factory. Prices range from $1,125 for a Chevrolet to $2,000 for a Cadillac.

Post 22 Nazi leaders convicted of war crimes at Nuremberg

On this day in legal history:

On September 30, 1946, the international military tribunal constituted by the Allied powers in Nuremberg, Germany, found 22 Nazi leaders guilty of war crimes committed during World War II.

ON September 30, 1946, seven years and a month after the Second World War began with the onset of the German armies across the western frontiers of Poland, the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg pronounced a mainly unanimous judgment in a document of 50,000 words on the German personalities and organisations charged before it.
