Genetics of North American wild horses

"During past ice ages, glaciers trapped a large proportion of global water volume, which lowered sea levels. In Beringia, lower seas exposed a landmass that connected Eurasia and North America. The temporary land corridor between the continents is known as the Bering Land Bridge. The Bering Land Bridge ecosystem provided a biogeographical dispersal route for animals and plants to migrate from Eurasia into North America and vice versa. The land connection acted similarly to wildlife corridors created by conservation scientists today, but on a much larger scale and created by the geological process rather than a conservation effort. To reconstruct the evolutionary history of present-day and extinct horses, we generated ancient DNA data from a panel of more than 100 ancient horses and analyzed these data using two approaches. First, we reconstructed the evolutionary history of maternally inherited mitochondrial genomes using a data set of 189 horses. The mitochondrial genomes sampled from both Eurasian and North American horse populations allowed us to estimate the number of times that female horses dispersed across the Bering Land Bridge in either direction. Second, we turned to the nuclear genomes, which, unlike mitochondrial DNA, are inherited through both male and female lines. Nuclear DNA molecules are larger and more complex than the mitochondrial ones. Thus, on the one hand, a nuclear genome is much more difficult to sequence and assemble, but on the other hand, it is more evolutionary informative.

Although our results are still preliminary and analyses are still in progress, our initial findings suggest that horses first dispersed from North America into Eurasia between 1 million and 800,000 years ago. However, the history of the horse is not so simple. After their initial colonization of Eurasia, we estimate that horses continued to disperse between the continents perhaps each time that lower sea levels exposed the Bering Land Bridge! The new immigrants integrated into the populations and shared genes, maintaining evolutionary connectivity between populations on the two continents. We found strong evidence that horses dispersed into North America from Eurasia during the most recent glacial period, not long before the colonization of North America by humans."

It hides them, instead spinning a story of overpopulation and overgrazing by wild horses to justify costly WH roundups, removals, sterilization and sale/euthanasia proposals...

-Beef produced on public lands constitutes just 1.9% of the nation’s beef supply according to Erik Molvar, the director of the environmental group, Western Watersheds Project.
-Public lands ranching subsidizes large livestock operations owned by millionaires and billionaires; less so mom-and-pop ranchers...

Conclusion:

When advocates claim that livestock outnumbers and out-grazes wild horses on public lands, this is not an emotional argument or an opinion. It is an argument based on the above data from the BLM and other government sources — data that the BLM doesn’t make available to the public and media, because it doesn’t want them to know…about the cattle, their owners, the damage they cause, and the massive subsidies they are taking from average Americans."

...There are five herds that have called this land home for centuries: Antelope Hills, Crooks Mountain, Green Mountain, Lost Creek, and Stewart Creek. Together, these wild mustangs and the Herd Management Areas (HMAs) they live in, make up the Red Desert Complex, 703,500 acres of public land and 49,500 acres of private land.

In September, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced that it would be conducting a massive helicopter roundup and removal of approximately 2,400 wild horses from within the Complex in October. According to the American Wild Horse Campaign, this number represents the largest removal of the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program since its inception.

Meanwhile, the BLM permits 20,995 privately-owned sheep and 9,763 cows on the various allotments throughout the year within the federally-designated wild horse habitats.

Then they’ll take a certain number of horses off the land. The cattle ranchers have a significant say on how those ranges are managed. The managers will do anything to keep those ranchers off their hind ends. The whole purpose is to remove wild horses from the public lands. The growth in the Grazing Permit Budget, at the time escalated 10-fold, where at one time a mere few thousand dollars existed in the Range Land Management Budget and Grazing Permit Program, escalated to $-millions immediately, once ranchers and special interests started to populate the Administrative branches of the BLM and Forestry; whereas, at the beginning, no subsidies — to very little – existed, or went to the Welfare Ranchers holding Grazing Permits; then, escalated to several thousands of dollars, to those who were aware of the government hand-outs, and hardly any per-AUM Unit payment to the BLM or Forestry made at that time – and is still $1.35 per AUM Unit. Although, these payments simply disappear in the accounting system – with no Procurement Process to assimilate or be held accountable for the money taken into this account, or out. . .

But not only are there many questions here, but the overwhelming bad-attitudes from the government agency employees’ themselves, and toward the taxpayers as well as the wild horses, the growth of the Corruption exponential, dirty-dealings and lies out of proportion and very obvious, and within many other subsidies’, began during this time.
