Plans to rebuild the Gothic cathedral in a historically accurate manner are underway. Here’s what we know so far about how long the Notre-Dame restoration will actually take.

It’s been two years since a fire ripped through Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris on April 15, 2019. To mark the somber occasion, French President Emmanuel Macron visited the building site along with ministers, architects, and other officials to see how the restoration of the 12th-century monument is progressing. “We’re seeing here how, in two years, a huge job has been accomplished,” Macron told the Associated Press during the visit on April 15, 2021. “We also see what remains to be done.”

    Col accidental find:

Workers Setting Up Scaffolding at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris Discover Ancient Tomb

Workers racing against a tight deadline to reopen the devastated cathedral of Notre Dame by Easter 2024—after it was nearly destroyed in a fire sparked by an electrical short three years ago—were shocked to find an ancient graveyard that included a “completely preserved, human-shaped sarcophagus made of lead” in the spot they were trying to set scaffolding.
The roof and spire of the historic Parisian church were destroyed when a fire swept the structure in 2019. Since that time, more than 1,000 historic oak trees have been felled to rebuild the ancient roof. But as workers started the delicate work to rebuild the ancient spire that crumbled as the church was consumed by fire, they hit a lead coffin while digging the footing holes for the tall scaffolding needed to erect the new spire.

Archeologists working on site—as is the practice in France when working on ancient structures—quickly identified the area as an ancient graveyard full of tombs, according to a statement by France’s cultural ministry. The centerpiece was the lead sarcophagus that had buckled under the weight of the church built above it, but remained perfectly sealed.

Using a tiny endoscopic camera, workers were able to glimpse inside, where they noted what appears to be a perfectly mummified corpse, complete with hair and clothing. Archeologists on site say it was likely a senior dignitary buried in the 1300s, about 100 years after the cathedral was built. “You can glimpse pieces of fabric, hair and a pillow of leaves on top of the head, a well known phenomenon when religious leaders were buried,” Christophe Besnier, the lead archaeologist, told AFP. “The fact that these plant elements are still inside means the body is in a very good state of conservation.”

I think it should be restored to be a new beauty, with adding some color to highlight the 21st century. I think the price tag was $5Trillion euro.

With such a beloved landmark, there has been debate over every detail: chairs versus pews; lighting; and art. But Villeneuve told us the structure will be as close to the original as possible:

"We'll be using the exact same materials as they did during the Middle Ages and in the 19th century," he said. "We went to look in quarries to see if the stones we had were the correct density. [And for the wood], it was oak, it shall be oak. The rebuilding techniques are absolutely identical."

They have already cut down over 1000 "historic" oak tree.

Initial results of the Notre Dame scientific renovation project

We followed the researchers of the joint CNRS / Ministry of Culture scientific project, who have been hard at work since the disaster on 15 April, 2019. Their mission: to unravel the secrets of the 12th- and 13th-century builders as an aid in restoring the edifice. CNRS News presents their initial findings, with a particular emphasis on stone, iron and acoustics, as well as the digital modelling of the monument, a virtual restitution integrating all past, present and future data on the cathedral in an interactive 3D visualisation tool.
