Post The life-changing magic of making do

The life-changing magic of making do. The antidote to endless, thoughtless consumption lies not in purging ourselves of the stuff we own, but rather, redefining our relationship with stuff altogether.

I have shoes and shirts older than my 29 year old daughter. As a life-long fix-it-rather-than-throw-it-away person the propensity to throw something away and replace it with a new one drives me crazy. This is an interesting article.

Maybe my computer is acting weird but I can't find the link to the article.

After a life changing event a few years back I went from pack rat to purger of things as there truly is " always something there to remind me". I found it thereupuetic to begin throwing things away. Now, every 2-3 years I throw out or give away nearly everything. Then, I replace it. Im not so much wasteful as I am trying to stay fresh and in control. One wasteful thing I do is I wear a new pair of socks nearly every day. Being retired I mostly wear casual things such as sweats , jogging outfits and of course athletic socks. As for the suits etc I used to wear everyday ? Gone. They became a reminder of who I was not who I currently am or aim to be.

DG, the sentence " not of purging but of redefining our relationship with stuff altogether " is actually quite profound to me. For brevity sake I will simply say " thank you". I am going to put a lot of thought into that...

I had a very old pair of levi's that had worn to the thread on the upper legs. The wife said to toss them, but I ended up selling them in a yard sale for 40 bucks.

Interesting article. I'm in a clear out stage, even those goods that I couldn't bear to part with when first my Mother, then Father, then my sister, passed. Memories imbedded in so many things. Now, the memories have faded a bit, and while I can appreciate the things for what they are, it's time to shed some layers of the past to the newer generations.

That all said, the most important thing I've learned is that there is a monstrous difference between want, and need. A lot of people still haven't encountered that fact.
When an argument cannot be sustained on proven facts, devolve to opinions and anger, that always works.
