"If you argue with a madman, it is extremely probable that you will get the worst of it; for in many ways his mind moves all the quicker for not being delayed by things that go with good judgment. He is not hampered by a sense of humour or by clarity, or by the dumb certainties of experience. He is the more logical for losing certain sane affections. Indeed, the common phrase for insanity is in this respect a misleading one. The madman is not the man who has lost his reason. The madman is the man who has lost everything except his reason." G. K. Wealth inequality is greatly over estimated in the US. I have several threads covering this issues here. The latest and greatest book on the topic is Capital in the Twenty-first Century by Thomas Piketty.

Capital is the most extensively researched study on the topic of wealth inequality. However, as I have pointed out, Piketty inexplicitly omitted social welfare benefits that the poor get in America (and elsewhere). As one example, over 36% of all Americas get the Earned Income Tax credit. By omitting these tangible monetary benefit Piketty greatly over estimates wealth inequality in the US.

Why is that important? Because the real question is not how much more the wealthy have, but whether the poor have enough resources to live not in abject poverty. The US does very well in that regard.
