    Shed

As some of you know, I am starting a new hobby of woodworking. I have created a thread for that hobby. But I need to clear out the garage so as to put my woodworking equipment and tools in. I need some place to put my garage stuff, like the lawnmower, boxes of stuff, etc.

Today, I am going to start on a small (4x6) lean-to shed with shelves. First, I have to make a "foundation" for it to sit on.

My thinking is to dig out a hole, maybe a foot or so wide, with a taper, wider at the bottom. I will make four of those, fill them with readymix concrete, put a bolt in each one to anchor the shed.

Do you think that would be a good plan to hold the shed?

Setting some small concrete pilings in the ground sounds like a good/basic design. Similar to free standing decks. Not sure you have any need for the "anchors"....or the fluting.

But one initial suggestion is that you consider making the shed bigger if possible. (Can almost guarantee you will fill all available space...)

For the novice framer, I would suggest buying a kit from Lowe's. Everything come pre-cut and has detailed plans.

You don't really need a "foundation," as such. I'd place it on a gravel bed with sloped edges so the water can run off instead of collecting and pooling under it. Look into the differences between a metal shed and a wood shed.

Metal or wood? Why not both

I think the poured concrete foundation is a great idea. There are so many different ways that you can do it, but that is a good one.

Are you talking about a footer and slab or just a slab? I've build my business around knowing the difference.

Slab is better than just footers if you want to keep vermin out of your shed. It also cuts down on the humidity inside of the shed when there is a lot of rain.

I would pour a concrete slab and secure your shed to that.

I would love to pour a slab. That would be easy. The problem is I can't dig down into the earth. I had BUD come out one time to mark for putting in a fence. There is a central box for internet/cable TV hub right outside that corner of the yard. Cables are running everywhere to all the houses in the area...right through the area I want to dig in. Plus, even if I could dig down a little to pour concrete, there is no access to the back of my house for a concrete truck. Fences and trees are between all the houses.

So... I am working on pouring a foot(er), spaced out as necessary, in each section where the shed will need support. I can't take a chance on cutting cables, so I had a brilliant idea: take out the dirt for the footer using water hose pressure! This actually works, but is slow. I figure I have eight different holes to prepare. I experimented on one and will do the rest of them tomorrow. When they are completed, I will fill them with QuikRete, set the bolts, and go with it.
