    Funny. We have some Vietnam vets here: did the Army even bother with the ASVAB? One would think that would be an easy way to avoid service- just deliberately tank the test.

    I think during Vietnam the Army would still have been using the old Army Classification Battery, and didn't begin using the ASVAB until '74 or '75.

    I enlisted in the Navy in '72 and took some sort of test that was divided into General, Math and Mechanical divisions. I remember my Recruiter looking at my scores and saying, "Well, you aced the first two...but I don't want you working on my car".

    I assume that meant you had to ace at least certain parts to get the non-combat jobs. Otherwise it was infantry for you.

    I recall that the only times the Navy and Marines were not at each other's throats so much was when we were deployed or detached to a base where there were also Air Force types, like Misawa or Kadena - then we had a common enemy.
