It means the thread is "On the Serious Side" (below the lighter side, area with very specific topics) and there is an increased expectation of civility and on-topic posting.

When you start a thread in most subforums there is an option at the top left to turn that feature on.

It is automatic on the Serious Side so that users viewing threads through areas like "What's New" will know which posts belong to those subforums.

I goofed it up. My response refers to the tPF feature that you can add to most threads you create.

The star comes up automatically when you post a new thread On the Serious Side.

You forgot to put a star next to your thread to say it was serious. LOL
