Because I found out long ago that shallow insignificant gestures are a much easier way to showcase my morality.
Compliance isn't virtue.
It's cowardice.

That is sort of like people who are comforted by fake emotion from their political leaders and never bother to look at the policies that actually affect them.

I saw the video early this morning and thought she was great. I was walking my dog, hadn't been within ten feet of another person during the walk and an American woman came charging up demanding to know why I wasn't wearing a mask. "I'm practicing social distancing. Get away from me." She was furious but i turned and kept walking my dog. I have to train him to bite when I say, "Sit!"

You're part right. I don't want to look submissive. I am not going to allow the government to make me wear a mask when it is of no use. I put myself under house arrest. I did all that. And then in 5 weeks it became more than evident that this was about something else other than a virus or the country's health. I will not willingly submit to the precursor of the mark of the beast. You go ahead though. It's your 'right', cause it's easier for you.
Your mask is your savior, wear it. I don't mind. and my not wearing it but staying away from masked dumbasses is my right too. And it really shouldn't bother you unless my individualism bothers you that much.

You, sir, look like a fool. Can you explain why you think, assuming you do, in fact, think, I should wear a mask when I'm not within ten feet of anyone else? Yesterday, I was riding my scooter in the mountains, all alone, and wasn't wearing a mask. I'm suspect if I'd passed you, you would have collapsed with the vapors but not with the flu or the Pelosi Pox.

There is no downside to wearing a mask. I'm not arguing that you need to wear one at all times, but if you're out in public and near other people, you should wear one. There is plenty of evidence that they do help limit the spread of the virus. Even if you question that evidence, wear one anyway, in case you're wrong. For the most part, it certainly appears that those who refuse to wear one or push back against wearing on are just afraid that it makes them look like submissive sheep, giving in to the man. Suck it up and look like a sheep. It'll save lives.
