Animals Notice Something Missing at the Zoo—People

I am anti-zoo, but this article is of interest. We need to do better when it comes to our animal friends.

Humans aren’t the only ones whose routines have been upended by the pandemic. While lockdowns have forced zoo and aquarium visitors to stay home, the animals appear to have noticed that they have the place to themselves. Some of them seem to miss people, staff say, while others don’t exactly seem to mind that no one is tapping on the glass.

“It completely surprised me,” said Beth Schaefer, director of animal programs at the Los Angeles Zoo, when she observed animals including a curmudgeonly black bear and red river hogs seeming to peer around in the sudden quiet.

“We always think, ‘The animals don’t really pay that much attention to visitors. They just kind of do their own thing.’ And then when the zoo is empty, it’s like, ‘Oh, wow, they actually respond or look at visitors more than we thought,’” said Mary Yoder, collection manager of primates at Arizona’s Phoenix Zoo.

Staff members are trying to fill the void. At Australia’s Adelaide Zoo, employees noticed their meerkats were less active than normal. Their solution: a shiny red remote-controlled car.

Why are you anti-zoo? Dont you think zoos look after their animals? Are you against pets too? Do you own any animals?

I live a few hours away from Dubbo zoo in NSW. I asked my dad to go to the zoo with me when corona stuff is over a few weeks ago. And he didnt want to. I was like - we can ride our motorbikes over there. That didnt sway him. I was like - they have elephants. And he is trying to change the subject. I said - they have these electric buggy things you can drive around in. That seemed to interest him for some reason. Maybe I should ask him to go go-karting with me instrad or something hey.

The Dubbo zoo looks after their animals. Most of them are so far away you can barely see them if at all. They have breeding programs for endangered species like the white rhino. Sure there are bad zoos but that comes down to regulation. There are plenty of good zoos like the Dubbo/Western Plains Zoo.

    You got any pets?

Me too. The last time I was at Dubbo zoo I was looking at an elephant and it was right next to the fence. I dont see elephants every day - its amazing to stand next to one. I was imagining myself as an ancient infantrymen having to deal with something like that charging at me. I know that North African elephants were smaller but still.

Do you agree that it is funny that the Romans made the North African elephant extinct by killing them all at the games? I kind of do. I do like elephants though.

And yeah - I dont want to have to go to Asia or Africa to look at an elephant. Im glad we got some at Dubbo.

Why is the extinction of a subspecies of elephant "funny"? I don't see the humor in it at all. It's very sad that they were wiped out by the cruel and depraved Roman games that passed for entertainment.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

The last time I went to the Dubbo zoo I jumped the fence of the Galapagos tortoise enclosure thing and one of my sisters took a cool photo of me posing right next to it. I like Galapagos tortoises. I also really like spider monkeys for some reason.
