An interesting article. I still wonder if my cats like me or tolerate me.
According to this article, they may have affection for you, although not to the same degree that a dog might.

I had dogs growing up. They are much more dependent on you. The only reason I don't have a dog now is that I live in a condo.

Their minds are wired differently. Dogs are social animals while cats are solitary hunters. That's a bit simplistic but I think it helps explain some of their interaction with humans.

I am very interested in this topic. I grew up with both. They interact with us very differently.

I just have cats now. They are very different than dogs.

My brother had gorgeous German Shepherds . I like dogs but I just don't have the capacity to give them regular attention. I didn't see my tuxedo "Andy" for over 6 hours today.

Forget the magazine articles. If you own dogs or cats and pay sufficiently close attention to them, you know more about them than any writer for a magazine. In fact, you know -- or at least are aware -- of things about them that you probably would not divulge to anyone lest you be considered nuts. Dogs and cats are both capable of great affection that I would call "love".

Here is a cat mourning a dead friend:

There are number of similar videos on youtube. See:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=cat+...w=1145&bih=699

Animals are capable of a whole lot more than we think. Of course, if you can't prove it with an electric prod and so forth, they can't be because you can't measure it.

We already know their hearing, smell and vision is often better than ours. They also have an inexplicable sixth sense, which might be simply because they pay closer attention to what's going on around them.

Maybe cats hung around just because man invented string.

Like the OP article says "cats were along for the ride, rather than attached to the humans." I'm just waiting for mine to figure that out.

Small cats are also scavengers, particularly when they're really hungry and people tend to toss out parts of carcasses that they don't find edible.
