Their minds are wired differently. Dogs are social animals while cats are solitary hunters. That's a bit simplistic but I think it helps explain some of their interaction with humans.

Forget the magazine articles. If you own dogs or cats and pay sufficiently close attention to them, you know more about them than any writer for a magazine. In fact, you know -- or at least are aware -- of things about them that you probably would not divulge to anyone lest you be considered nuts. Dogs and cats are both capable of great affection that I would call "love".

Animals are capable of a whole lot more than we think. Of course, if you can't prove it with an electric prod and so forth, they can't be because you can't measure it.
We already know their hearing, smell and vision is often better than ours. They also have an inexplicable sixth sense, which might be simply because they pay closer attention to what's going on around them.

Small cats are also scavengers, particularly when they're really hungry and people tend to toss out parts of carcasses that they don't find edible.
