When I was a kid there would be a family reunion at my paternal grandparents' farm every year. Most of the relatives lived within a few miles of one another anyway and saw each other on a regular basis, so it was not a big deal in that respect. But some of us did not live "the plain life" and lived farther away. My grandparents were Mennonites, but nearly all the other relatives were Old Order Amish. And the food they would prepare for those occasions...it was amazing, both in quantity and quality.

Here, instead of barn raising, it is "mudding", neighbors getting together to refinish someone's adobe home or an old church. We have an adobe church here that dates back to 1772 and every couple of years, huge numbers of people turn out to help patch and repair the adobe. It becomes a big community affair.
