Reminds me of when I was a private. Back then we dug fox holes during our training exercise. Our primary mission back then was movement to contact which could be days or longer. Each late afternoon we would dig foxholes for defensive positions. Run patrols and anti-recon ops at night, then move on the next day.
One field exercise it rained the entire time. So the fox holes were often thigh high in water and the NCOs wanted us in the foxholes. After a week or so of this my platoon sergeant found me outside my foxhole and I stood up and held my arms out. The SFC asked what the f I was doing. I said, I am a tree. He didn't buy it. Back into the flooded fox hole.
At some point after I left the infantry, the enviro wacos sued the DoD about us digging foxholes all over the US. They won, no more foxholes for training, unless they are set up for regular use at a training center. I did appreciate them for that win.
