Each late afternoon we would dig foxholes for defensive positions. Run patrols and anti-recon ops at night, then move on the next day.

One field exercise it rained the entire time. So the fox holes were often thigh high in water and the NCOs wanted us in the foxholes. After a week or so of this my platoon sergeant found me outside my foxhole and I stood up and held my arms out. The SFC asked what the f I was doing. I said, I am a tree. He didn't buy it. Back into the flooded fox hole.

At some point after I left the infantry, the enviro wacos sued the DoD about us digging foxholes all over the US. They won, no more foxholes for training, unless they are set up for regular use at a training center. I did appreciate them for that win.

We never took "showers" in the field. Because we are light infantry (Air Assault unit) we only stayed in the field for 2 weeks. So it wasn't needed (not sure what they will do now with females because they need showers a lot more frequently than males under the Army field sanitation manual). Mech Infantry stays in the field 3-4 weeks.

My search pulled up nothing to explain why females require more showers. In everyday life, they don't frequently have body odor. What is the reason for their apparent greater attention to hygiene in the military?

For one the period thing. There were other reasons. I took the Field Sanitation class for a deployment in 88.

Kate Cunningham, from Sefton, Merseyside, changed her surname to Elder when she and the elder tree tied the knot at Rimrose Valley Country Park, and admits her 15-year-old son is "a little" embarrassed. Kate Cunningham said the pair are more loved-up than ever and they have no plans to divorce. The traditional gift for a first wedding anniversary is paper. The 38-year-old said it was one of the best decisions she has ever made when she married the tree at Rimrose Valley Country Park in Sefton, Merseyside in September last year. She celebrated her first year of marriage with two friends and some elderflower champers - leaving her boyfriend and two kids at home. She admits her 15-year-old son is "a little" embarrassed.

I fear she will be disillusioned later in life when she realizes the relationship is one sided and unfulfilled.

During Desert Shield my unit was on the front lines in Saudi Arabia on the border with Iraq. We did anti-recognizance patrols each night against the Iraqi SF troops. Our scout platoon actually did $#@! inside Iraq.

We had no access to showers anywhere near, but every now and then Top would send one or two Solders back to HQ with the resupply run. They could take showers there. When they got back we suddenly could smell how bad we smelled.

I never got a rotation back. I would let one of the guys on my fire team take my place.
