Post How Big Oil Misled The Public Into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled

How Big Oil Misled The Public Into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled.

This is an NPR investigative report on what it contends is lying by "big oil" about plastic and it would all be recycled. Make your own decisions.

But it's not valuable, and it never has been. And what's more, the
makers of plastic — the nation's largest oil and gas companies — have
known this all along, even as they spent millions of dollars telling the
    American public the opposite.

I never minded returning glass pop bottles for the nickel refund.

I doubt this "investigative" report will amount to much. It isn't like Big Tobacco and its health / death risk cover up.

So Big Oil felt pressure to push recycling even though they new it was a pipe dream. They used their own money for it.

    This is a hit piece.

It tries to draw a link between plastics and big oil, but that's a stretch. DuPont did acquire Conoco and held it about 18 years before selling to Phillips, but the average oil producer has nothing to do with either supplying oil to plastic extrusion companies nor does it manufacturer plastics. The ad in the OP link was one of DuPont's ads, but DuPont has been using soybean oil and other organic sources of oil to produce plastics.

That said, we've all be told for decades that plastics were not biodegradable, so that's no surprise to anyone. As the OP link points out, plastics ARE recyclable, but they do degrade with each reinvention so two cycles is about the max. The problem is removing the ink and labels before recycling.

There was absolutely no reason for the NPR article to go after Big Oil based on the DuPont link that stopped meaning anything when they sold Conoco.

Big Oil is corrupt, just as Big Natural Gas is, Big Coal is, and Big Renewable energy is. But, linking Big Oil to the plastic claims is silly.
