Mexican archaeologists identify ship carrying Mayan slaves

The paddle wheel steamboat, known as "La Unión," was discovered by archaeologists in the Gulf of Mexico two nautical miles from Sisal in 2017. But it took three years of research to confirm that it was a Mayan slave ship.
La Unión illegally captured and transported about 25 to 30 Mayans monthly to Cuba, where they were forced to work in sugarcane fields between 1855 and 1861. This was during the rebellion known as the Caste War, according to INAH.

    Illegally, mind you.

Does anyone know of a good movie of the conquistadors? I doubt it could be made today.

It's kind of a weird film but I liked Aguirre. It's based on a true story.

I actually want to thank you for reminding me. It's a great story.

Very trippy movie, the english version is on youtube and I just gave it a watch.

I have faint memories of some of those scenes, like the ship in the tree, maybe it was something I saw on tv as a child.

lol yeah, it's a weird film but the style seems appropriate to the subject matter. The real Lope de Aguirre was a Spanish soldier/adventurer who rebelled in the middle of the jungle, murdered the expedition's leader and tried to seize power in Peru but we don't really know much about him. The film is actually a blend of several different historical events. It's the sort of artsy film I would normally find unwatchable but I liked this one.
