I think it depends where you are from. Cornbread evolved from a flat bread made by Native Americans that kept for a long time without going bad so it was good as a travel food. It was not sweet. This bread was eventually came to be known as journey cake or johnnycake in many parts of America. However, in the north, there was a tendency to add molasses. Cornbread as it is known now, contains leavening and may be either unsweetened or sweetened. In the north, where it is not served with savory foods, it tends to be somewhat sweet.
