Abraham Lincoln deathbed photo taken ‘hours after assassination’ is ‘99% genuine’ say

    Taken hours after death.

The picture has been the subject of debate with some experts convinced it shows the body of the 16th president of the US, while others have rubbished the claim.

Abraham Lincoln was killed on April 14 1865 by John Wilkes Booth, an actor and spy of the Confederate States.

The president had been watching the stage play, Our American Cousin with his wife, Mary Todd at Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C, before he was fatally shot in the head.

He was taken to a boardinghouse across the street where doctors battled to save his life after he slipped into a coma for eight hours.

Lincoln died early the next morning.

The documentary now aims to determine whether the body seen in the photograph is indeed that of Lincoln’s.

The picture shows a man with a narrow face and a beard laying down and staring lifelessly into the distance.

It also shows that the man’s right eye appears to be bulging as a result of an unknown wound.

Mrs Lincoln. Other than that, did you enjoy the play?

Bit ghoulish of course but now, so many years later, I'm 'glad' for history they did that.

It's actually somewhat surprising that an "official" photo of the corpse was not made. Folks in those days were far less less squeamish about photos of corpses. Not only were photos of criminals and outlaws who'd been gunned down by the police widely distributed, but people would pose their dead relatives for keepsake photos, sometimes in group photos with the living. (How would you like to be a little kid sitting for a portrait holding your dead brother's hand?)

It was probably about thirty years ago that I first saw the photos of JKF lying on the table before the autopsy, and I will say I was shocked. A hundred years ago, perhaps I'd have been less so.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.” - Robert E. Howard

"Only a rank degenerate would drive 1,500 miles across Texas and not eat a chicken fried steak." - Larry McMurtry

In that day taking pictures did exist but it was much harder and the equipment was more cumbersome. The most famous photographer of the era was Matthew Brady who was famous for taking many Civil War battlefield photos, but still 1865? For a picture to be 'standard procedure' -- think too early.
