Both saw/see liberty as something provided by the State. As Rousseau argued, society puts the individual in chains and the state must be turned to to free man from those chains.

According to Jonah Goldberg the French Revolution was the first socialist revolution and had nothing to do with freedom for all the people. Even Marie Antoinette's famous quote "Let them eat cake" was a misquote. The truth was that while bread was in short supply, cake was the food of the aristocracy and too expensive for the "peasants". Antoinette's plea was to allow them to have access to cake if they could not get bread. It was not a disdain for the "little people" but rather an attempt to feed them. The quote was probably first quoted by the New York Times, much like President Donald Trump's "There is good people on both sides"

Look at any socialist country today and you'll see the people living poor and the elite living high on the hog.

Of course those elites will someday give up the dictatorship of the proletariat and usher in the communist utopia!
