FIRST HUSBAND
On June 15th, 1989, the divorce of Courtney Love and James Moreland was finalized.
Actually, it wasn’t so much a divorce as it was an annulment. The couple’s marriage ended after only three months, and for the most part, the first marriage of the wife of Kurt Cobain’s widow has been wiped away from history.
But if you dig down into that rabbit hole, you can find some information about the marriage and Falling James Moreland, less known as the cross-dressing frontman for The Leaving Train and more known as Love’s first husband, who also produced the first single on Hole’s debut album, “Retard Girl.”
It wasn’t a happy marriage, as if often the case when young, drunken drug-abusers get married in Las Vegas on a dare (Moreland had apparently dared Love to marry him. She took him up on the offer, but always considered their relationship a joke, though Moreland decidedly did not).
The official reason for their divorce was irreconcilable differences, but the official reason never tells the whole story. Apparently, Love was pregnant with Moreland’s child but, because of her drug abuse, was forced to have an abortion. “I”ll never forgive her for that,” Moreland stated.
There were other problems, naturally, according to Moreland:
She definitely has an evil side. She once tried to burn my bed when I was sleeping. A fire started and I woke up in shock. It’s impossible to figure out Courtney’s motives. Her disdain was powerful, and she came off as a spoiled little snot… Courtney is a violent person who, even in the midst of our anonymous, crummy, poverty-stricken little marriage, threatened to have me beaten up for two hundred dollars when I didn’t do what she wanted. I was so scared of her I caved in immediately.
In 1997, seven years after the divorce, Moreland told The New York Press that Love was a “right-wing Phyllis Diller,” a homophobic conservative that “threatened to have me beaten up when I didn’t do what she wanted.”
Long after the annulment, Love called it the “stupidest thing I ever did,” while Moreland contended that “most people would want to kill themselves just waking up to her.”

Courtney Love stated in divorce records search that she and Moreland wed as a joke. The marriage only lasted a few short months before Love again filed for annulment in Los Angeles Superior Court. The relationship was never meant to last as they were both very busy with their jobs and personal lives. Love said that she was having problems of her own which made it difficult to share with her husband then. At the time, she was involved with drugs and alcohol and would have emotional outbursts which in turn would spark arguments between them. Moreland was also away from home due to frequent appointments and meetings he had with his publications and productions.
Courtney and James relationship ended when Courtney became pregnant with thier child, she continued to use heavy drugs, refused to stop and then abortion was forced onto the situation due to the drugs. “It was a nightmare” James said while choking down tears. “I’ll never forgive her for that."
Public divorce records show that their relationship immediately got stagnant then bitter in those three short months. Communication was impossible and Love reportedly engaged in extramarital relationships during their time together. Although Moreland was not the jealous type, it seems that the actress’s background as a stripper already had a lot of negative effect on their supposed-to-be intimate relationship. Although they had their share of fights and disagreements, there was really nothing much to discuss since they didn’t even know each other that well. The main grounds for the divorce cited were irreconcilable differences.
Falling James has gone on record as saying: She definitely has an evil side.
The couple immediately went on their separate ways after the divorce was finalized. They both got married and divorced in 1989 which would be Love’s and Moreland’s firsts. According to public divorce records, the couple’s relationship was damaged after the whole ordeal.
Hole’s first single ‘Retard Girl’ was produced by Love’s then-husband, James Moreland, before they divorced after a three month marriage.
