The deer had better be headed to a zoo.

Once it gets man-smell on it, the mother will reject it.

The cat looked thin...hungry. This time of year, the deer are skittish - hunting season.

The camera-boy, an apparent California transplant...made mention of a gun, but didn't get ready to use it? He was almost done - fast-walking backwards for half a mile will do that. Never thought of killing the cat, even after video-recording that he was in real danger?

That was reported on by the Coeur d'Alene television station. (Which seems odd even to say, because fifty years ago, CdL was a mining ghost town). That's 140 miles from me...the same topography. And the same problem with those great-big kitty-cats.
Perhaps he was a young male trying to defend his territory.

You just don't know how to get along with felines.

Did you know...a cougar will purr?

It's 99-percent genetically identical to a housecat. Only size and coloring, and shape of the ears, are really different.

Cougars tend to be pretty shy, as a rule. They will mark their territory - but from other cats, and potential predators. I believe they're an apex predator, anyway.

But obviously, other wildlife entering their territory, is either welcome food, or potential irritation...for example, a cougar isn't going to stand down a grizzly, unless it's a female cougar with cubs. Likewise, humans. Unless a cougar learns how defenseless humans are - in which case it has to be destroyed - it will back down. A cougar isn't that big, IIRC - about 70 pounds. By sheer size, it's going to be reluctant to attack unless hungry.

That's why I was wondering if he was just trying to chase off the human. He was aggressive, but still kept his distance.
