Yes, I was aware that it is considered offensive, insulting and/or derogatory.
No, I was surprised to learn that it is considered offensive, insulting and/or derogatory.
It isn't offensive, insulting or derogatory by itself. How can it be insulting to say, MY sexual preference is have sex with a women, how else would I marry one and have two girls?
This is just another snowflake leftist whine that is calculated to weaken America with bogus narratives to create internal dissention over phrases, look at the nonsense in the media over this. There is nothing offensive about the phrase Sexual Preference itself. it is how the phrase is used in conversation that might injure someone.
They think there are more than two sexes in America, which is totally irrational, unless they accept any of the following rapid human evolution of Asexual reproduction in humans, or Fission reproduction, or Budding, Fragmentation.....
There are only these real life possibilities that exist for humans:
Same sex relationship
Male and female relationship
Bisexual relationship
Abstinence
All other snowflake crap is a sign of mental illness.
"Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again." Ronald Reagan

Can you explain the context?
If I asked a bisexual friend, it wouldn't be a big deal. If I asked a peer I don't know well it might become an issue in part because there is an assumption of preference and sexuality.
But I consider it more common courtesy than trying to be politically correct. I want to treat others how they wish to be treated (dignity, respect), and I hope they'll do the same.

Context? - ask Mazie Hirono.
Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect. -- Woody Hayes
Nothing wrong with sexual preference. Fluid and bi sex identities use preference. All 57 varieties of them do...unless you speak dem.
Is what is your preference today fine?

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/...th-term-sexual“Even though you didn’t give a direct answer, I think your response did speak volumes,” Hirono said. “Not once but twice you used the term ‘sexual preference’ to describe those in the LGBTQ community.
“And let me make clear: 'sexual preference' is an offensive and outdated term,” she added. “It is used by anti-LGBTQ activists to suggest that sexual orientation is a choice.”
The Hawaii senator said labeling sexual orientation as “both a normal expression of human sexuality and immutable was a key part of the majority’s opinion in” Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 decision that legalized same-sex marriage in the U.S.
In short, no context. It's just offensive.

It doesn't matter what you know now to be offensive or not.. No matter your "understanding" These freaks look to make more $#@! offensive every day. What is ok now is not ok tomorrow. I don't care if they are offended or not. There is no right to not be offended

I actually thought they would be offended by being denied free will and the ability to chose.
Oh no, you cannot be gay or straight because we determined you were born "this way".
