    Shepard's pie is made with lamb.
    Cottage pie is made with ground beef.

    A traditional recipe is simple.

    Minced meat
    Grated onion
    Grated carrot
    Grated garlic
    Worcester sauce
    Tomato paste
    Red wine
    Chicken stock
    Thyme
    Potatoes (mashed)
    Egg yolks
    Parmesan cheese.

    That's it. Nothing else.

    Same horse different jockey. Minced meat with potato on top. Grated cheese on top of the potato adds extra taste.

    Yes, that's why we use cheese. Plus it also gives the potatoes a nice golden color.
