    The media is trying to cover for her by saying "86" means to cut off.

    But that's not the origin of the phrase.

    It actually goes back to the mob days in Las Vegas.

    When the mob made a hit, they had the person "86'd".

    That meant driven 8 miles out of town, and buried 6 feet deep.

    Most common usage is in restaurants. Many say it originated during the soup kitchens during the Depression. I'm sure there are dozens of stories related to the origin.
