I know the importance of turnovers cannot be over stated. I do believe protecting the football can reach a point of religion where it blunts the offence occasionally.
Eli is the only one that comes to mind but "hey lets give it a shot " quarterbacks were at least entertaining.

I dont understand why you Americans dont throw more lateral passes. Same reason apparently. It would be so easy to create overlaps in NFL and exploit them with lateral passes because there is no real defensive line - scattered all over the place.

Too risky. If the receiver drops the forward pass, it's incomplete. If he drops the lateral pass, the opponent can recover the ball, and possibly score.
Usually you only see the laterals at the end of a game, when the losing team has nothing to lose, and is making one final desperate attempt to score.

That's because the defense is laying back to prevent a long ball or long gain. That leaves the outside open. It give the runner time to turn and accelerate without hitting a crowd.
It drives the fans crazy because they are going to get some good yardage until they screw up or a defensive plays sees something and makes a stop.

Still. Is it that hard to catch a ball? Rugby league footy training for kids generally always involves kids running in a line passing ball from on end to other. Team runs up and down field or around oval doing this. You wouldn't expect 10 year olds to drop a ball once while doing this.
