    Thank you all.

And have a good day, Peter1469. My personal congratulations on being one of a few military personnel who actually put their lives on the line for your country or who were ever personally in danger in service to our country. I think there are about two on this board who fit that description.

    Thank you for your service.

    There are more than two.

I am hoping that was not a not so subtle dig at SW. That would be very inappropriate on this day and in this thread and actually on any day in any thread. Every member of the armed services willingly puts himself or herself at risk. You could be a cook, a wheeled vehicle mechanic or a Delta operator. When you sign on the line and raise your hand, you are saying you will do whatever it takes to defend this nation.

Well, I thank all of you, especially those who were in combat.

The fact is, however, that most people anymore enter the military because it's a great gig. Sorry.

And it is a great gig.

The reasons that young people today have for enlisting in the military are pretty much the same reasons they had a hundred years ago: to travel and see the world, to learn a trade or to get an education. Events like 9/11 do sometimes provide a small, temporary boost to recruitment, but that trend is short lived. Some go in because it's a family tradition to serve - others because a good friend is enlisting. Polls have shown that about half of all recent enlistees cite the training they'll receive as their primary reason for signing up.

Whatever a young person's reasons for enlisting or seeking a commission, the important thing is the manner in which they serve their country once they're in. As anyone who has ever served in uniform knows, not everyone can adapt to the life - not everyone belongs there.

Others are surprised to find themselves career soldiers, when to become one was not their original intention. I have a son who joined the Army after high school because neither of us was in a position at the time to finance his going to college. I don't think it was ever his plan to make the Army a career. He trained as a tank mechanic up in Washington state for three years, then got his Bachelor's Degree with money he'd saved while in, then turned around and re-joined the Army to train as a helicopter pilot. He was medically disqualified for flight duty shortly after getting his wings, but was accepted for a DOD program that paid for his medical school and now he's a Captain in the Army Medical Corps.

I wouldn't want to have missed some of the experiences I had over the course of almost 21 years on active duty. I've been retired since 1993 and sometimes it almost seems like a half-remembered dream, till I look at the shadow box on the hall dresser, or I find myself back in touch with somebody I served with a lifetime ago. I guess the greatest thing I got out of the military was the woman I met at my last duty station, and today is our 31st wedding anniversary. Speaking of which, it's about time to go put the steaks on.
