    Kipper Snacks

Am I the only one around here who thinks these things are great?

My favored grocery store stopped carrying these lightly smoked, salted herring fillets in a tin almost a year ago, so I recently added them to my Amazon subscription list and now I get 18 tins delivered very other month. I think I've eaten a half dozen just in the last week, so I may have to adjust my order accordingly.

If you're unfamiliar, they are normally found in the "Canned Meat" aisle with the sardines and the smoked oysters. If you like either of those things, you'll probably go for kipper snacks as well.

What do they taste like.......I mean, beside "fishy". I used to like sardines, but outgrew the taste for them.

I don't know if the stores in my area carry kippers, I've seen other can fish though.

Kippered Herring and scrambled eggs, a traditional English breakfast. I like them (I also like pickled pigs feet so there!) but frying them up really really smells up the kitchen!

I never considered trying to heat them up in any way. From what I gather, breakfast kippers in England are not so much fillets of herring as they are just the entire fish, sliced head to tail, gutted, salted (or pickled) and lightly smoked. That doesn't make me hungry. I got a fish with my breakfast at the Senior Sergeant's Mess at the Brit air base at Brawdy, Wales, but it was larger than a haddock, yellow and it stunk to high heaven. Turned out to be a haddock.

The taste is similar to sardines, but somewhat different. Hard to describe how.

I love kippers and smoked sprats and generally keep a small supply. However you shouldn't eat them too often since they are pretty salty.

For one thing, herring are a bigger fish and canned kippered herring are both deboned and smoked. The texture is also very different than sardines - more robust. Sprats would be closer to sardines in flavor and texture, but again they are smoked and I've never had smoked sardines, or sprats not smoked, so does make comparisons difficult.

I've also had whole smoked kippered herring (not canned). They are really salty but good.
