It’s amazing how Trump completely dominated the thoughts of so many people.
You can start a thread about the ineptitude of the New York Jets and someone will respond with, yeah, but how about Trump?

When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.“ - Benjamin Franklin.

To be fair on this one, there was a theory at the time that the warmer weather would be beneficial. And in fact, the numbers did improve over the summer. This is partly because there are less people crammed indoors together because they're outside more. Just like now the numbers are going back up as the colder weather hits. It also makes sense that the virus doesn't live as long on surfaces in the heat.
And as he noted, they weren't sure yet, so I don't really see why there's an issue with this statement.
Well, one day it will disappear......magically, once its no longer useful.

The virus will disappear as soon as the chocolate don't need it anymore.
Trump $#@!ed up by playing the middle. He either should have immediately gone all in talking about how deadly it was, or he should have made the case that it isn't as bad as advertised and that the economy and civil liberties should be at the forefront. He kinda did both on the surface, but in reality did neither. He sent conflicting messages, he messed up.

My state just announced we're not shutting down but restricting more, public gathering stuff. Restaurants are still open but you need to make reservations to eat in, stuff like that. Restricted capacity.
At this point I don't see why even restrictions let alone shut downs now are needed.
But like you mentioned I think the approach to this juncture wasn't well thought out and in fairness I can't really blame anyone for not predicting what could happen but the politics and interests.
I'd like to think this could be a learning experience but I'm a realist.
my junk is ugly
I think he was screwed no matter what he did. When there is a disaster the sitting president gets blamed for it, fair or not. And the current media made damn sure he was blamed for all of it. What I think is interesting is I bet if he would have locked everything down tight and mandated masks, the media would have called him a fascist and a tyrant (which they did anyway). But in that case we might have seen the Dems arguing for voluntary mask wearing instead of mandates, and opening up for the sake of the economy. It might have been an interesting reversal.
Bottom line, it didn't matter what he did, they were going to criticize him for it.
